About this deal

Blisteringly fast response times. Ideal for FPS games (Apex Legends, Titanfall 2 etc). Everything is sooo fluid.

The problem is the screen being a Nano IPS panel gave me eye strain during gaming sessions and became practically unusable for me over the space of less than an hour. Whilst this is the case for me this may not apply to everyone and therefore I have not marked it down for this. Everyone's eyes are different and therefore are more sensitive than others. I will leave this part of the review as a food for thought. Elsewhere, you get excellent connectivity in the form of DisplayPort, HDMI and USB-C interfaces.MSI has also fitted the Optix MPG341CQR with a camera in its lower bezel. OSD Options - There are many on screen display options to change the way you use your monitor. Even an FPS counter! Height adjustable stand design. The monitor positioned can easily be moved if you apply gentle pressure above or below the monitor

MSI goes for VA rather than IPS panel tech for its hot new 34-inch gaming monitor

It's going to blow your mind away. As did mine. Yes there is a big difference between 60Hz. While the difference isn't as big as 60->100/144 as it is to 100/144 -> 240, it is very noticeable. resolution - Yes I know, I shouldn't complain about this, but there is a voice inside me that says the size warrants a higher resolution. The screen just doesn't look sharp. It makes for punchier colours and better contrast than the IPS alternative and in this implementation comes with little to no downside in terms of response and input lag. We’d rate that as a win. I actively switch away from this monitor to my primary monitor unless I am playing these games. Chances are, even if you own an RTX 2080 Ti, you would too.

This monitor is also limited to 1080p. Not something you'd want to be doing photoshop editing with or daily driver for work.So you are probably thinking this review is dragging on and on what could possible be wrong with this monitor? MSI offers three levels of pixel response. The fastest is a little OTT and results in some overshoot and inverse ghosting. But the middle setting makes for very good response with no noticeable downsides.

Yes, there are LCD panels that deliver slightly less motion blur. But what MSI has achieved with VA panel tech here is impressive. There’s also a zero latency mode, but we found little subjective evidence of lag operating in standard mode. TL;DR: 240Hz is both a curse and a blessing. You're spending extra for a niche feature you might not even be able to use. Make really sure that you really need the 240Hz, because most people would be better off with 144Hz + 1ms to up the display specs in other ways (picture quality like IPS or resolution like 2K) Just make sure you don't settle with 60Hz unless you're going for 4K. Most of the competition in this segment goes with IPS panel tech, but VA tech does have one very clear advantage, namely static contrast. This monitor is rated at 3:000:1 for static contrast, far better than any IPS screen can achieve. That’s not to say the Alienware AW2720HF is bad when playing other games or outside of games. In Metro Exodus we’re plenty pleased with the colors (with 99% coverage of sRGB), responsiveness, and contrast of the display. The visual quality holds up in movies as well, where we’re even more appreciative of the IPS panel’s wide viewing angles and anti-glare coating. We can easily see the screen from wherever we’re lounging. Pro Tip: Run those games and display the FPS to see if your system can handle this. If you aren't getting 180+ fps, no need to get a 240Hz, just get a 144Hz monitor with 1ms response time.Speaking of cameras. MSI also provides a mount that fixes to the top bezel. The idea is to attach a webcam to the display for streaming purposes. It’s a niche feature, but could be handy for gamers who like to stream. Performance More conventionally, the MPG341CQR’s core feature set begins with a 34-inch VA panel that boasts both an 1800R curve and 144Hz refresh. That’s pretty nippy for a VA panel, which raises questions about this monitor’s pixel response. It’s rated at 1ms, but pixel response hasn’t always been a VA strong point. So I bought this monitor before returning it with great excitement and high hopes but unfortunately it was not meant to be. The final really significant feature from an image quality perspective is HDR400 certification. It’s the very lowest level of HDR support and doesn’t include local dimming. It also means the MSI Optix MPG341CQR is capable of 400 nits brightness, which is punchy by conventional terms but nowhere near the 600 or 1,000 nits produced by what we would class as true HDR displays. TN Display - My daughter pointed out that if sitting too low or at an angle, the screen becomes harder to see. Ideally you want to be looking straight at the screen. You the screen doesn't fade when looking at it from slight angles.
