On Terra below, the Blood Angels went utterly berserk, their vision clouded by images of their Primarch’s final moments. They fought as if they themselves were the Great Angel in his desperate battle with Horus. In their madness, the Blood Angels were nigh unstoppable, swiftly turning the tide against the Traitor forces and playing a crucial role in the ultimate defeat of Horus’ ground forces. Though the visions eventually faded, Sanguinius’ death left a permanent psychic imprint within the gene-code of his sons – a flaw that still exists in every Blood Angel more than 10 millennia later. Despite the danger involved, Orpheo leaves the rest of his Space Marines behind due to the low numbers that survived the journey through the warp. After being set upon by the Genestealer Cults, Orpheo’s disappearance prompts the Angels of Death to descend from their ship to pierce the mystery of the planet’s eerie silence.

The Blood Angels may be renowned for their noble visage and for fighting as the very embodiment of the Angels of Death, yet the more blood they spill, the more they have an overwhelming desire to drink the vital fluids of those they slay. By channelling their bloodlust, the Blood Angels can unleash a ferocity that has led them to victories beyond count. Sometimes they lose control of the Red Thirst, however, and in the aftermath of such battles, it is not uncommon to find the bodies of foes – and more disturbing still, the occasional Imperial citizen – drained of blood… The Sanguinor, also known as the Exemplar of the Host, is a mysterious entity of unknown origin that is associated with the Blood Angels Space Marines Chapter, and has been named after Sanguinius, the Blood Angels' martyred primarch. Blood Angels also have a habit of sleeping whenever possible in the sarcophagi used to create them. They apparently believe that it is in this slumber that they are one step closer to Sanguinius and seek to gain insight into the psyche of their forefather. [1a]

They became spectres that haunted the wild places of the Great Crusade, the terrors loosed by the Emperor to clear his path across the stars. The IXth accepted this duty with a grim pride, never shirking in the mantle that they wore. Each campaign was undertaken with a quiet, brooding hunger for blood and death that was as terrifying as it was effective. They fought without mercy and paid no heed to anything other than the destruction of the enemy. Shunned and isolated from the wider Imperium, they began to descend into charnel cults and bloody rituals. Various Red Cults formed as the Legion was broken apart by the widening Crusade, and their brutality attracted censure at places such as Yarant. They began to only maintain line infantry and jump troops, in part due to the reluctance of the Imperium to supply them with more advanced weapons. [44c]

Not a member of the Adeptus Astartes but nonetheless valued by the Space Marines aboard her ship, Livia is the human Captain of the Sword of Baal and is brutally efficient in her command. She was at the helm of an entire fleet before the Cicatrix Maledictum tore through the universe. A hellish journey through the warp left only the Sword of Baal intact, and Livia bears the weight of those lost souls heavily. Of our brave Captain, Andy had this to say, “Orpheo is the embodiment of Baal, equal parts fury and nobility, as old and as venerable as the suit of Terminator armour he wears in battle. For the story to work, he needed to be the best of the bunch in spirit, someone they could aspire to. But we didn’t want to make him indomitable – he’d have been two dimensional. The Red Thirst
You see, during the Horus Heresy, the gene-seed (the genetic make-up used to create Space Marines) belonging to the Blood Angels was destroyed and someone thought it’d be a good idea to create a new one from their Primarch after he died. Spoiler alert - it wasn’t a good idea. The blood-curse sends soldiers off the deep-end as they feel the rage their Primarch felt in his final battle and then they get the fun of experiencing the death of their Primarch (essentially their father). But don’t worry, it’s not all bad, while they go insane they gain some strength of their Primarch and get to go down in the blaze of glory. Cheery stuff. What’s In The Box? The Lamenters are an unfortunate Loyalist Chapter of Space Marines which, perhaps more than any other Chapter of the present era, seems to have been cursed by a dark shadow that has long determined its fate. The Blood Angels will spare no effort to attain the material needed to create the Chapter's art and have even fought wars to obtain them. This includes Bloodstone gems, from the deep caves of the Cruor Mountain on Baal and the larvae of the Spinewyrm fauna. Bloodthirsty sand clams are also needed, as the white pigment used to paint the Chapter's angel wings, can only be obtained by crushing clams' shells. [57c] Tactics The regular outbreaks of misfortune that afflicted the Chapter also resulted in a great deal of flexibility and pragmatism developing in the Lamenters' tactical outlook, as well as in their recruitment procedures. Whatever the truth of this, ill-fortune had already begun to follow the Lamenters like an unwanted shadow. As the years passed, there has been a continued and observable increase both in the Lamenters' predilection for melancholia and in the frequency which with the Red Thirst affects Lamenters' Astartes.

Her level head in a crisis and willingness to take matters into her own hands have earned her the respect of all the Blood Angels, from Captain Orpheo to Techmarine Hadrael. Despite being ‘only’ human, she speaks with just as much authority as the Space Marines and is not afraid to get her hands dirty when a threat to the ship arises with the Blood Angels gone. Bearing this Power Spear is viewed as both a great honour and a heavy burden by the warriors of the Lamenters Chapter. It has been wielded at the forefront of many great victories and mighty battles. However, more of its wielders have fallen in their moment of triumph than have lived to return to the Chapter's halls. Though the Adeptus Astartes know no fear, the wielders of this spear tend to become concerned with ensuring that they will sell their life as dearly as possible when the time comes to pay for their success. Among these "shield" systems was Cryptus. By the time the Blood Angels arrived in-system the Cryptan Shieldworlds were already embroiled in desperate last stands against the teeming swarms of the hive fleet. Outnumbered many times over, the Blood Angels nonetheless readied themselves for war. Dante divided his forces between the worlds of Asphodex and Aeros.
