About this deal

Lose yourself in the world of the arks and in the company of an unforgettable character in this French runaway hit by debut author Christelle Dabos. A Winter’s Promise, the first installment in the Mirror Visitor Quartet, introduces readers to a remarkable heroine and to the richly imagined universe of the arks: floating celestial islands governed by the spirits of immortal ancestors. Ophelia, a mix of awkward misfit and misunderstood genius, possesses two special gifts: an unrivaled talent for reading the past of objects and the ability to travel through mirrors. Her peaceful existence on the ark of Anima is interrupted when she is promised in marriage to Thorn, a taciturn and influential member of a powerful clan from a distant ark, the cold and icy Pole. Ophelia must follow her fiancé to the towering city of Citaceleste, where nobody can be trusted. There, in the company of her inscrutable future husband, Ophelia slowly realizes that she is a pawn in a political game that will have far-reaching ramifications not only for her but for her entire world. In 2013, she won the Gallimard-RTL-Télérama prize for first youth novel, for A Winter's Promise, the first volume of her Mirror Visitor quartet. [3] The title of the series ( La Passe-miroir in French) is inspired by Le Passe-muraille, a literary work by the French writer Marcel Aymé. [4] The Missing of Clairdelune, trans. Hildegarde Serle, Europa Editions, 540p, 2019 ( ISBN 9781609455071) While she doesn’t know why this place in particular was selected to be part of it all, she’s starting to figure out that hiding her identity may be tied in to what is going on. She already is a pawn in a plot that could end up being life and death. When Ophelia becomes betrothed to Thorn, a member of the fierce and mysterious Dragon clan, she is forced to leave her home and navigate the dangerous politics of the other clans at the Pole.

The nitty-gritty: Lots of potential, but unfortunately, this story was too problematic for my taste.

The series was compared by the national press to that of Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling, or His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. [7] The first two books were awarded the Grand Prize of the Imaginary in the category francophone youth novel in 2016. [8] Those first two novels were subsequently released in English translation by Europa Editions in 2018 [9] and 2019. [10] The third novel in the series was released in English in 2020. As she kept going, she discovered her ‘second nature’. She also joined an online author community called Silver Plume that gave her encouragement. They were so supportive that she decided to take up her first challenge in literature, to enter a contest for youth novels written for the first time and did quite well! On them live all kinds of people. Ophelia and her family live on Anima, an ark where values like family and warm-heartedness are very important. Ophelia grows up in a colorful and noisy family with many siblings. Nevertheless, she doesn't quite fit in with the family, preferring to withdraw with a book and her lively scarf or escape through mirrors and wander the corridors of the museum, where she can read the history of various objects just by touching them.

The Author

Ophelia is a hero for the ages, and I hope this series becomes the next big one that grabs the imaginations of young adults and adults alike.” I read the book in two days (in my mother tongue) and rushed to the online store to buy the second one in english, as it is not translated in my idiom yet: so I would say, for me, the pacing worked very well.
