About this deal

The reverb uses a standard 350mm springline; sonic differences in comparison to other gear arises principally from the mounting of the spring and the drive circuitry. As implied earlier, a small amount of reverb greatly improved the combo's keyboard sound, and moreover, the reverb depth control showed pronounced changes in FX over most of its range - unlike some! One worry here is the absence of any foam rubber to restrain the spring from bouncing around excessively. Moving the amp around with the reverb turned fully on and the volume turned up is definitely not recommended for people who jump out of their skins easily! The buttons on this unit are lightning-fast, and they have a consistent, reliable action and a textured top surface for improved grip. For competitive play, they’re superb. Moving on to other instruments, the combo handled a drum synth competently. Electret and high impedance moving-coil mics also made a good partnership with any of the 3 inputs. Putting all three instruments together (Keys, vocals and the drum synth), the combo proved itself up to handling a one man band without the intermodulation distortion (giving rise to ear wrenching nastiness) that characterises some combos in this mode.

90 – Vortex Keyboard Tab 90 – Vortex Keyboard

This is the exact style of keyboard I'm looking for, but unfortunately not the price I'm looking for. This device is tenkeyless, which means it ditches the numberpad. That saves a huge amount of space, obviously – this version of the Huntsman is just 362mm wide and it only weighs 741g, so you’re barely going to notice it in your bag. The USB cable is removeable, which is handy for transport. Elsewhere, the MS110 has RGB LEDs, albeit only in three zones, and it has a minimal, plastic design that’s decent, but without the sheer build quality of aluminium units. There are no extra features, like media buttons or macro keys, and no wrist-rest. The S90 As Controller Photo: Mark Ewing Yamaha are nothing if not generous with the freebies they supply with their instruments these days, and the S90 is no exception. Central to the suite of software bundled with this instrument is the Voice Editor for S90 application (shown right), for both Mac and Windows, which provides detailed and graphical access to all Voice parameters, plus easy computer-based offlining of banks of your custom Voices. The only thing you can really moan about is that you can only load up the Voices from the User bank, and that it's not possible to edit Performances. File Utility is also cross-platform, allowing files to be sent to and extracted from a Smart Media card slotted in the S90. USB drivers for both platforms are also supplied, as are setup files that allow various mix parameters and transports of some popular MIDI sequencers, such as Cubase, Logic and Sonar, to be controlled from the S90. I did manage to make it distort, but to do that I had to turn the keyboard and all the channel controls up full. So if you're prepared not to be an utter utter utter like I was, you will get out of the Cobra 90 almost exactly what you put in. Which is what you want from a keyboard amplifier. There are usually two different 65% layouts and which one you choose usually comes down to preference. We’ll go over some of the basic differences to help you decide. 65% Layout #1: All Keys Smushed Together

Yamaha S90 - Sound On Sound Yamaha S90 - Sound On Sound

This layout is basically what it sounds like. All of the keys are closely located together so the keyboard is ultra-compact. The home cluster is laid out vertically instead of the usual box shape and the arrow keys are blended into the rest of the keyboard. If you’re looking to save on size and willing to get used to the keys being close together, this one is for you. 65% Layout #2: Separate Home Cluster and Arrow Keys Photo by u/DragonballUnlimited I personally think it looks a bit better than the CM, but a bit higher in cost and not the switch I'm looking for (partial to brown or clears...preferably clears). Full-size keyboards are great for anyone who needs to have a versatile selection of keys at their disposal, whether it be for gaming, work, or even just browsing the internet. They can offer lots of options for programmable keys and are easy to type on since none of the keys are on a lower layer, except for the standard ones. Sometimes More Expensive It's a bit of a surprise to see the Motif's arpeggiator making the crossing to the S90, though the surprise is entirely pleasant! I like arpeggiators, and this one is about as good as they get. In fact, it's so sophisticated that it moves rather too far from classic arpeggiation to 'instant-gratification' auto-accompaniment. Still, everything has its place.

The sound set of the S90 is essentially that of an original Motif, although over 30MB of extra wave ROM is given over to new acoustic and electric piano waveforms. Consequently, the factory sound set is slightly different to allow for the many piano and keyboard sounds. The S90 is generously provisioned with factory settings; 384 Preset Voices and 48 Drum Kits, 128 General MIDI Voices and one GM drum kit, and for the user, 128 Voice and 16 Drum Kit memories (the latter are filled with factory settings when you take delivery of the S90, but can be overwritten at any time). Factory preset Voices are sensibly assigned to different categories on the S90 (for example 'Acoustic Piano', 'Keyboard', 'Synth Lead', 'Drum/Percussion' and so on), and this is a habit you should consider forming as you program your own Voices. The S90 has a sophisticated search facility that lumps similar Voices together, and clearly labelled buttons allow you to access and audition related Voices via the display. Damper pedal (DP-10, capable of continuous detection) Option (sold separately) Option (sold separately) Dedicated stand: KSC-90 Quite independently of its synthesis facilities and effects, a lot of people will be looking at an instrument like the S90 just for the quality of its keyboard and the potential offered by its control set and master-keyboard functions.
