About this deal

Do you know the problem? In flats with a high ceiling, draughty areas and rooms full of nooks and crannies the heated air cannot reach every section of the room, which consequently leaves quite a few unpleasantly cold spots. The permanently installed heating system can be running at full blast and still your feet are cold. In summer you’re facing a similar situation when the cool air of the air conditioning system is not perceptible pleasantly to the same extent everywhere in the room. Most fans make quite a din on their highest settings, but these two are as quiet as church mice, even at full tilt, which makes either of them the perfect bedroom or lounge buddy. Perhaps it’s the DC motor or the structural design (or both), but both models produce a much lower frequency when spinning, and that makes a massive difference to a room’s ambience. Fear not if you find it a bit financially testing, however. You could opt, instead, for the Dyson Pure Cool desk fan (DP04), which is a smaller version of this tower model with the same tech but a smaller price tag.

When it comes to traditional bladed pedestal fans, you'll struggle to find any better looking than those from Boneco. Hailing from Switzerland, the heartland we think of most for its horological leanings, the F220 floor-standing fan has the same Bauhaus aesthetics as a minimalist watch, which will slot in unobtrusively to any clean, modern interior. But like any good Swiss watch, there's plenty more to it than its dashing looks. To choose the right fan, first consider the size of the area you want to cool. A desktop fan may be fine for smaller rooms, whereas a standing or floor fan will be more effective for larger spaces. Tower fans (vertical and rectangular) are more compact, discreet and stylish than pedestal fans (stands with big blades at the top), but the latter is usually a lot more powerful. There’s a neat LCD screen on the front that shows the setting as you tap buttons, but it shows the ambient temperature otherwise. It’s not overly bright and, when you turn the fan off, the screen dims further. It’s a shame that you can’t turn the screen off completely, as you can on other MeacoFan models: the option to do this on other MeacoFan models tends to be on the remote control, which you don’t get here. MeacoFan 360 Performance – Exceptionally powerful for such a small model While it’s one of the taller tower fans we’ve tested, it’s worth making room for Levoit’s 36-inch Tower Fan. Look beyond the two-part plastic base and it’s a well-built unit with no hint of wobble, with stylish and straightforward touch controls on the top panel. It also has some useful advanced features, including an Auto mode that adjusts the speed according to the room temperature, and a Sleep mode that will do its best to keep you cool while staying quiet. There’s also a Turbo mode for some extra speed, plus a simple one to 12-hour off timer. However, what we like most about this tower fan is that it offers an efficient and economical way to cool a larger area. It pushes through air at speeds of up to 3.2m/sec at the highest of its five speed settings, or 3.3m/sec in Turbo mode. True, it’s a little loud when maxed out, at 44.4 to 45.2dB, but on its next to lowest setting you can still hit speeds of 2.1m/sec, with the noise reduced to around 32dB. On its lower settings it uses only around 20W as well. Throw in the competitive price, and you have a great tower fan for bigger rooms.

Small enough to sit on a bedside table, side table or windowsill, the MeacoFan 360 is beautifully designed, unobtrusive and easy to use. Simple touch switches control the power levels and you can manually adjust the vertical angle, helping you to find the perfect cooling option. Powered by either mains or USB connection, you can take the fan anywhere inside or outside.Floor fans are larger, more powerful and are designed to fill a bigger space. As they’re designed to be used at a distance, they might offer more angles, a wider oscillation range and a remote control. This is handy if you want to turn the fan up or down from the bed or even just pause it while you take a phone call. Otherwise, they’re very similar to desk fans and have the same kind of features – in fact, there’s plenty of overlap between the two. Key specs – Dimensions: 38 x 28 x 28cm; Weight: 3.4kg; Oscillation angle: 90 degrees vertical/ 90 degrees horizontal; Cord length: 2m; Warranty: 2 years; Power: 14W Given that this fan is of the ‘personal’ variety, don’t bank on it cooling a whole room – even a small one – and certainly don’t bank on it purifying anything other than the air immediately around you. But if you’re after a personal high-end fan-cum-purifier that performs well and looks the part, then this one is a worthy, albeit pricy, contender. Also consider settings – higher speed settings can create a cooler temperature – and features. Do you want an oscillating head and tilt action for more flexibility? Do you need a timer? Or remote control? Or even wi-fi? Finally, bladeless fans are a good call if you’ve got kids and can be easier to clean. If you're looking to keep a smaller room cool, you might not be particularly keen on a chunky, retro pedestal fan that looms over your bed wafting air over you. Instead, a smaller desk fan will be the best option to cleanse the space of hot air. There are plenty of options that are small enough to fit on a bedside table or on the end of your desk, and won't be overkill compared to larger models. How much should I pay for a fan?

This product is suitable for well insulated spaces or for occassional use, it comes with a 3 year guarantee. It’s a similar story with pedestal fans, which are basically more powerful desk fans on a stand that are designed to cool a larger area. You can usually adjust the height, pivot and oscillation to control airflow, but they tend to be bulkier than tower fans so you’ll need to make sure you have enough space – both for use and for storage. As the app and remote also add scheduling, and a quiet and energy-saving night mode, and show you all manner of graphs about the air quality and temperature, we feel that the Pure Cool does justify its price. There's even adjustable oscillation, via the app. You’re never guaranteed a scorching summer in the UK, but when the heat hits, the best fans will keep you cool, calm and collected. Indeed, a good blast of air from a decent fan can keep things bearable and help you get some shuteye when the mercury is rising. Here we’ve rounded up the best fans on the market so that you can find the perfect desk fan for your office, tower fan for your lounge, or whisper-quiet fan to help you sleep at night. Assembly is easy, and connecting it to your smartphone and Wi-Fi network using the GeoSmartPro app is a simple enough process. From there, you can create daily schedules, preset modes and even auto-modes that will switch the fan on to a custom setting when specific weather conditions are met. It’s also compatible with Alexa and Google Home devices, although you can’t alter as many settings using your voice as you can when using the app or physical controls.Use the TVE 100 to boost the effect of your heating or air conditioning system – without expensively turning up the heating or cooling output. With its strong air circulation the TVE 100 distributes the air evenly in the room. This ensures pleasant freshness in all corners of the room in summer and better distribution of the heat in winter. The warming effect of an open fireplace can also be noticeably intensified in this way. It's also a very handy fan, mustering up a decent breeze, but remaining quiet up to about the 60 percent power setting. At higher speeds, there is a bit of a whoosh, as you'd imagine. Turning up the speed also increases air purifying power, but there's also an Auto mode that reacts to potent guffs of microparticles and gases. The bods at Meaco are clearly on a roll at the moment because this is by no means the only great fan in its armoury – we look at in detail at three more of their fans below. The best fans can be a lifesaver for coping with warmer weather because let’s face it, no one wants to contend with balmy bedrooms or sweltering home offices if they can help it. And we know that perhaps the weather is winding down to more autumnal climes now, but simply shifting some of the stuffy air around your room can be the difference between a happy home and a hot home.
