Do you know the problem? In flats with a high ceiling, draughty areas and rooms full of nooks and crannies the heated air cannot reach every section of the room, which consequently leaves quite a few unpleasantly cold spots. The permanently installed heating system can be running at full blast and still your feet are cold. In summer you’re facing a similar situation when the cool air of the air conditioning system is not perceptible pleasantly to the same extent everywhere in the room. Most fans make quite a din on their highest settings, but these two are as quiet as church mice, even at full tilt, which makes either of them the perfect bedroom or lounge buddy. Perhaps it’s the DC motor or the structural design (or both), but both models produce a much lower frequency when spinning, and that makes a massive difference to a room’s ambience. Fear not if you find it a bit financially testing, however. You could opt, instead, for the Dyson Pure Cool desk fan (DP04), which is a smaller version of this tower model with the same tech but a smaller price tag.

When it comes to traditional bladed pedestal fans, you'll struggle to find any better looking than those from Boneco. Hailing from Switzerland, the heartland we think of most for its horological leanings, the F220 floor-standing fan has the same Bauhaus aesthetics as a minimalist watch, which will slot in unobtrusively to any clean, modern interior. But like any good Swiss watch, there's plenty more to it than its dashing looks.To choose the right fan, first consider the size of the area you want to cool. A desktop fan may be fine for smaller rooms, whereas a standing or floor fan will be more effective for larger spaces. Tower fans (vertical and rectangular) are more compact, discreet and stylish than pedestal fans (stands with big blades at the top), but the latter is usually a lot more powerful. There’s a neat LCD screen on the front that shows the setting as you tap buttons, but it shows the ambient temperature otherwise. It’s not overly bright and, when you turn the fan off, the screen dims further. It’s a shame that you can’t turn the screen off completely, as you can on other MeacoFan models: the option to do this on other MeacoFan models tends to be on the remote control, which you don’t get here. It also has some useful advanced features, including an Auto mode that adjusts the speed according to the room temperature, and a Sleep mode that will do its best to keep you cool while staying quiet. There’s also a Turbo mode for some extra speed, plus a simple one to 12-hour off timer.However, what we like most about this tower fan is that it offers an efficient and economical way to cool a larger area. It pushes through air at speeds of up to 3.2m/sec at the highest of its five speed settings, or 3.3m/sec in Turbo mode. True, it’s a little loud when maxed out, at 44.4 to 45.2dB, but on its next to lowest setting you can still hit speeds of 2.1m/sec, with the noise reduced to around 32dB. On its lower settings it uses only around 20W as well. Throw in the competitive price, and you have a great tower fan for bigger rooms.
