That which is precious is observed. Full stop. The mind is the road to Truth. And only the mind can be the road to Truth because you have no other road. Maybe after a point, the road too disappears. But till that point, you do walk on that road, don’t you? Then the mind will be obviously observed, if you love the Truth. Word into Silence is the first of eight sets of John Main’s collected talks. These talks were given in the 1970s in England as an introduction to meditation and a means of encouragement for those who had begun to meditate. They make clear the meaning and purpose of meditating so that we may embark on the journey with deeper understanding and commitment. Obviously, observation cannot show the truth to you. What do you see in observation? All the falseness.

Many of us have forgotten (or even fear) quiet. We live in a world full of noise and chatter. A world wherein our daily routines are inundated with distractions and responsibilities. This practice, called the Sphere of Silence, is a 60-minute routine that can help you stay grounded, focused, and most importantly, remain hopeful when your mind wants to spiral. There is one ground rule: Follow the below steps in complete silence. Otherwise, why would you attend to the Truth? Why would you become an attendant, a servant of the Truth? Why? Without love, attention is tension, a lot of tension. A tension. And you already have so many tensions. Improve your English with Collins. The process of meditation is the opening of the eye of the heart. This is the deeper and more simple consciousness that allows us to know that we can love and be loved and that we are all in love. John Main OSBWhat follows is a 12 step programme for meditation. The essential mantra offered is "Maranatha" which is ancient Aramaic for "Come, Lord". The radical simplicity of this mantra is offered as the focal point for your concentration, allowing worldly distractions and illusions to melt away and, rather than pray ourselves, understand that it is the Holy Spirit praying within us that grants us our enlightenment as communion with the Lord. It feels that it can remain, continue to remain, in its own lowly dimension, and yet through its actions and cleverness, and manipulations, obtain something of the beyond. That’s the false hope of the ego. But the ego does not see it as false. In short, it advises setting aside 30 minutes each morning and evening for ‘silent’ prayer time, choosing a mantra such as ‘Maranatha’ which will help keep you focused despite distracting thoughts, when thoughts do come, let them pass like clouds and keep returning to the mantra and the present moment, and eventually allow and listen, trusting that the indwelling Spirit will pray through you. It provides very clear guidance on all of these elements as well as grounding the roots of this method in history, providing a chapter too on John Cassian. Also it details the positive effects of regular, consistent centering prayer on one’s life.

So, the object of love is a non-object. Those who have come before us, have called that object as — Truth, God, Beloved, Amma-Baba, Father, Maa.John Main OSB (1926 1982) believed that the contemplative experience creates community. His genius was to recover and to re-present a way into this experience for ordinary people from within the Christian contemplative tradition. In the teaching of the desert monks on pure prayer he found the practice of the mantra. Realising that this way of prayer could further the search of many modern people for a deeper spiritual life, he recommended two regular daily periods of meditation to be integrated with the usual practices of Christian life. – The World Community for Christian Meditation El libro es uno de los primeros que describe la propuesta de la Comunidad mundial de meditación cristiana. The all-important aim in Christian meditation is to allow God s mysterious and silent presence within us to become more and more not only a reality, but the reality which gives meaning, shape and purpose to everything we do, to everything we are... That one, final experience, remains elusive. We exist for the sake of That. That which is liberation. We breathe for the sake of that. We come to tomorrow, so that tomorrow, THAT may come. So, it is for the sake of THAT, that time exists. It is for the sake of THAT, that all future exists. Spend the first 10 minutes of this step reading a chapter of your book. Then, use the remaining 10 minutes to write down a summary of what you just read by hand to strengthen your ability to process the information, and learn something new.

Then all the mediums will become godly, divine, because they will become a medium between you and the divine. The object of love is so big, so total, so filling, so occupying, so unrelenting, so very compelling, that it leaves no space for the subject to hide and survive. But the ego does not want to believe that. The ego wants to believe that all the possible dimensions are contained in its one little dimension. So it keeps hoping, its entire little life, that it will be able to obtain, something of the beyond, while just remaining itself. You want to get Him through your actions, but your actions are just like you. And what is it that you want? A beyondness from your self. You want to go beyond your self, being yourself. That won’t happen. Word into Silence is John Main’s classic book on how to practise contemplative prayer, or Christian meditation. It offers a practical twelve-step programme that teaches how to be at peace with ourselves. Stepping aside from the busyness of our daily lives and being still in the presence of God, John Main says, is the key to discovering our true selves and knowing God as 'the ground of our being'. I give an example to you. I have heard of this little soldier, he was actually a civilian, in one of the wars in the last century. He was so small, he was not even trained as a soldier. His village had been invaded, the villagers had been captured, taken away for forced labour. They were being used to construct a bridge. That’s what the invading army was using the locals for, take them away and use their labour to build a bridge.
