Wiccan altars have a rich and fascinating history that spans many cultures and traditions. We will now look at the ancestral roots of Wicca as a modern Pagan religion and the history of altars throughout various religious and spiritual practices. Wicca and Its Ancestral Roots

When thinking about the location of your altar, it’s also nice to consider how good the energy feels in that space. I tend to get morning sun in my apartment and I’ve positioned my altar to make the most of that. I love that it gets bathed in natural light every morning and I feel like this brings a really special energy to my altar. Maybe you have a favourite plant you’d like to incorporate? Or a favourite window? A favourite room? Your altar is meant to be a space that feels special to you, so choose your location accordingly. Witchy Altar Tip #3 Direction of your AltarEven inside the witchcraft community, bones are a controversial topic. Outside the community, it's considered In the meantime, here is a small selection of things you might want to include. Again, choose things that you love and that give you good energy and raise your vibrations.

Crystals and stones have been used for energy concentration for a long time. Megaliths such as cromlechs and dolmens, giant stones which concentrated strong energy and now a powerful place of strength on the altars. Small crystals will suit your altar, such as a variety of quartz crystals (amethyst, citrine, rose quartz, smoky quartz, clear quartz, milky quartz). As crystals can be processed and unprocessed, it is recommended to choose the unprocessed crystals (their natural crystalline form) for better energy concentration. If you wish to make an oracle stone out of different minerals, it is best to work with processed oracle stones. Candles are good for concentration and increasing energies for the needed spell. Candle colors have their own distinguished meanings. IncenseYour altar can be round, square, or rectangular. I prefer a square or rectangular altar because it’s easier to setup (in my opinion). But that’s definitely up to you. The important thing is that the surface is flat and level. You don’t want your candles falling over! Placement TIP: If you buy an altar, look for one made of oak or willow. Oak has properties of power and strength, while willow is sacred to the Goddess. Research the magical properties of trees to guide you. The Wiccan altar has its roots in ceremonial magic, which emerged during the Renaissance period in Europe. Ceremonial magic involved the use of rituals and incantations to invoke supernatural powers and achieve spiritual goals.

Athames are often considered symbolic of the air elemental if you’re interested in elemental magic. If you want to learn more about these things, see my article on elemental magic or getting your first athame. Organization

Creating a Wiccan Altar

Wherever you decide to put it, having a representation of the four elements can be helpful for when you want to call on the elements when doing spellwork or casting a circle. Your representation of earth should be positioned to the north, air to the east, water to the west, and fire to the south. You might choose something like a bowl of dirt or salt for earth, an incense burner for east, a chalice or a seashell for west, and a candle for south. Whatever first comes to mind when you think of the elements, that is what you should place on your altar. Let’s Talk About Tools Green: Green is a nurturing color representing growth, fertility, and abundance; it signifies healing and life. Are you a beginner Wiccan that wants to set up their first Wiccan altar? Setting up a Wiccan altar can be easy, but there are some things you’ll need, and want, to know before you start. But first, what is a Wiccan altar? An altar is there to enhance your craft, not to make you feel guilty or to browbeat you with a set of rules that you feel like you have to follow. A witch’s path is meandering and what you liked yesterday you may not like tomorrow. Remember this when creating your altar, and don’t fixate on how you might be doing something “wrong”. If you aren’t a ceremonial or super traditional witch, then you have all the freedom in the world to create an altar which brings you joy. Many early Wiccan practitioners incorporated elements of Eastern spirituality into their practice, including the use of altars. Altars began to be seen as a sacred space for meditation and contemplation and were adorned with symbols of spiritual significance. The Emergence of Modern Wicca

Optional: a small feather or bell to cleanse energy or represent the element of Air if not using an herb bundle for burning Fumitory: Fumitory is used in protection charms and spells; it also brings spiritual growth and peace, and serenity. There are various altar designs, amongst the common ones are the Half Divider and the Four Quarters designs. The divider is a common and simple altar design, dividing the altar space in two halves – one for the Goddess and the other one for the God: If you plan to work with Candle Magic – and you probably will after Lesson 7 – you’ll need at least one candle holder. Take your time when looking for one. Make sure that it’s sturdy enough to withstand the heat of the candle and that it won’t fall over if you accidentally bump into your altar.I encourage you to work with biodegradable, eco-friendly tools. Materials such as ceramics, glass and metal are ideal. A Wiccan altar is a space where you can focus on your spirituality. It is an instrument that helps you connect with your higher purpose and the Divine. Your altar is a sacred space that connects you to the spiritual realm, the gods, and to magic itself.
