After the animals find out who the culprit is the book turned even more fun. There was a trial, and then the animals decided to help the bear with his problem, which I found really nice of them. They could have easily stayed angry. Once upon a time in a forest, many creatures lived happily alongside one another and in harmony with nature, until one day something very strange happened. Branches began to disappear from the trees but, despite careful and thorough investigation, no one could work out what was going on, until an eyewitness spotted a crucial piece of evidence.The animals? homes are disappearing. Tree by tree, the forest is being cut down. Clues! There must be clues. For instance, look–there is a mysterious bear carrying an ax! But what would a bear want with so many trees? Perhaps the discarded paper airplanes littering the forest floor have a story to tell? Yep, it takes the animals most of the book to figure out who is cutting down the trees. It isn't until someone finds a certain object that they find out who it is. I did find it silly that it took them that long to figure it out. You only have so many animals in the forest, and instead of going by every one of them, they just did hours of crime scene investigations. :P The change is sudden, dramatic, and puzzling. It may turn out that a divided Court is the legacy of Felix Frankfurter. But anyone seriously interested in pondering that legacy has got to wonder: Who raided his papers? Something terrible is happening in the forest. Branches from trees are going missing overnight, and nobody knows what's going on. Everyone living in the forest gathers together to look at the crime scene, and to try to discover what has happened. Initially they blame each other, but after discovering everyone there has a solid alibi they continue their investigations to try and find the culprit.

This is an intelligent and entertaining picture book, with unique and fascinating illustrations. It carries a topical ecological message and includes added extras such as instructions for making paper aeroplanes. Also common is the blame game played by all the animals! Both can make the story more familiar for kids. And a great opportunity for parents to talk about it being wrong to blame people without proof.

Looking for something different

This fall, the Supreme Court issued a number of rulings that came as something of a surprise—refusing to hear a series of cases involving same-sex marriage, for instance—but there’s no reason to believe that historians will ever really know how the Court arrived at these decisions. Very few of the documents that could genuinely illuminate them will survive. The Federal Records Act, passed in 1950, specifically excludes the Supreme Court. In 1978, in the wake of Watergate, Congress passed the Presidential Records Act, which made the papers of American Presidents the property of the federal government; destroying them is a federal crime. There is no judicial equivalent. The Supreme Court’s official papers—formal filings, such as petitions, opinions, and briefs; and official records, such as audio recordings, transcripts, and governmental, case-related correspondence—end up at the National Archives. The papers of the Justices, if they save them, tend to go to the Library of Congress, to their alma maters, to their home towns, or to some other place they happen to like. They’re scattered across the country, and, by the time they arrive, they have, as a rule, been carefully culled. A great story and lots of opportunities to use with a class. Older children could do their own version of the court case and put the bear on trial with a jury and judge deciding whether he is guilty or not and what his punishment should be.

Can you put the results into a graph and describe what happened?In May, 1974, Philip Kurland, acting as a consultant to the Senate Judiciary Committee, reviewed transcripts of the Watergate tapes and concluded that Nixon may have committed crimes warranting impeachment. Nixon resigned on August 9th. He might have destroyed the tapes if he could. To stop him, Congress passed the Presidential Recordings and Materials Preservation Act, in December, 1974. The act might have altered the fate of the Justices’ papers, too; it provided for the establishment of a seventeen-member commission to study, and make recommendations, regarding the records of federal officials in all three branches of the government. The report of the Public Documents Commission, issued in 1977, urged that the Justices’ papers, like the President’s papers, be made public property, and opened to the public fifteen years after they leave the Court. That measure was not adopted. Look at the illustrations that show what the animals are saying. Can you turn these into speech bubbles? Could you use those speech bubbles to write what they are saying, using the correct punctuation? I guess it’s for older kids. There is text within some of the pictures that work best for independent readers.
