DELICIOUS🍴So, I bought this book last summer and purposely waited until this week to read it....and what a beautiful story! Of course, this tale of a Connecticut family’s Passover Seder (and so much more!) can be read any time of the year, but it was delightful to read it now, and to learn more about a faith and holiday that was pretty unfamiliar to me. Janowitz writes fabulous contemporary fiction, and THE DINNER PARTY is my favorite of her books so far ~ she completely nails the complexity of family dynamics with grown children, including in-laws, potential in-laws and the sometimes hilarious mishaps that come at family gatherings. I loved all the descriptions of location and food, and even enjoyed picturing some of the fashion choices. I could definitely relate to a lot of the Jewish factors and understood the humor at certain times throughout. The book had a This is Where I Leave You feel, even though I've only seen the movie.

I’ve read several books by Tracy Bloom and Dinner Party is probably my favourite. Dinner Party is a fast-moving story is centered around 3 couples who meet up for monthly dinner parties, each taking turns to host. The three women, all very different, have known each other for years. couples reunite for a dinner party. After the meal they are talked into playing a truth game and that is when the trouble begins. They have all consumed a lot of alcohol tensions rise. Early the next morning one of them is dead and it look so like they were murdered by their partner. It goes on from there, with secrets and lies doing nothing to make life easy for this group of people. In The Dinner Party four married couples are brought together for a dinner party that leaves them all full; full of doubt, suspicion, and mistrust. No one could have known just exactly how an innocent game of truth would lead to such tragedy.

The Rothschilds are the stuff of legends. They control banks, own vineyards in Napa, diamond mines in Africa, and even an organic farm somewhere in the Midwest that produces the most popular Romaine lettuce consumed in this country. And now, Sylvia Gold's daughter is dating one of them. It's fitting that I read The Dinner Party during the first days of Passover. Really, I read it in less than a day, if you don't count the time spent in a Seder or sleeping. I just couldn't put it down! The short chapters that alternated between the large cast of characters helped things along, as I wanted to see what was happening for everyone throughout the story. Each chapter gave a lot of valuable information that built up to the climactic moment.I did not like any of the characters, nor did I laugh or cry at the moments that called for it. But somehow I was rather satisfied with the ending, considering it took me a while to reach there.

So what is ‘Dinner Party’? First and foremost, it’s a close exploration of the dynamics of family, written in a series of non-chronological set-pieces spread over several decades. The initial set-up, revealed during the eponymous dinner party, might recall Marina Carr’s ‘Portia Coughlan’ – a surviving twin in a dysfunctional midlands family is haunted on every anniversary of the death of her teenage sibling. But there the comparison ends. Gilmartin’s prose is far more in the tradition of Anne Enright, particularly in its tight focus on the problematic mother-daughter relationship. It’s an exploration, written in close-third, of (among other things) survivor guilt – Kate, the quieter, less-favoured twin has outlived her more feisty, extrovert sister, Elaine. In later years, this guilt manifests itself in anorexia and other confidence- and body-issues. There’s an excruciating scene of depilation enough to put the stoutest heart off lasering! If you like reading about (minor) family dramas and enjoy holiday celebrations, this book is for you. It was, in fact, the description of the Jew celebrations what I found more interesting and of course, the wonderful idea that people from different religions can get along just fine. In The Dinner Party by Brenda Janowitz, we are introduced to two different families coming together for the first time. The connection of their children to each other creates an occasion that both families feel can only help them. Each has differing reasons to push the relationship. The dinner party is set for the Passover Seder and will be the night the Gold's of Greenwich meet the Rothschild’s of New York. I did think the format of the chapters was enjoyable with one of the characters point of view alternating chapters. I also enjoyed the journalist asking questions and someone answering at the end of the chapter that might make the reader want to push on to find out what lies in store for this group next. I like the fact that the three couples are so very different and their lifestyles span a range of circumstances. The tying thread of the friendship of the women is their school days and it is apparent that it is Beth who has ensured the three women stay in touch. There is a camaraderie and rivalry displayed between the three of them which I think is often there in long-term friendships.Sylvia > bossy, righteous, controlling - *Matriarch-Goddess* planned an “elevated holiday meal”.....fancier & flashier than all past years....
