About this deal

Tributes to Rankine have already begun to flood in. Broadcaster Vic Galloway said his death was “incredibly sad news.” Hawking, Rom. "10 Bewilderingly Underrated Post-Punk Bands You Need to Hear". Flavorwire . Retrieved 3 March 2017.

Their second studio album Sulk, released in 1982, was the group's definitive statement, a fascinating blend of lush, New Romantic popcraft and dark, surreal cabaret stylings. Upon its release, the album was voted the album of the year by Melody Maker. DEMPSEY: I never saw Bill and Alan disagree about doing anything. They had an instinctive understanding. Billy would hum whatever he wanted, and within a couple of seconds, Alan would be barking out the chords. A pre-release promo cassette was released on 15 September 1988, [8] but the album was rejected for release by WEA Dingwall, John (6 May 2016). "The Associates in talks to stage anniversary concerts". Dailyrecord.co.uk. Fantastic. He’s a big, red-haired Viking type of guy, and he was never scared to experiment. I think he took his lead from us. He did some amazing work.Random Jukebox: the Associates cover Blondie's Heart of Glass". Stevepafford.com. 5 September 2018 . Retrieved 16 June 2021. He later taught at Stow College in Glasgow, where he helped students set up their own record label, Electric Honey, which later launched the careers of bands such as Belle and Sebastian, Snow Patrol and Biffy Clyro. We wanted other textures in there and that was always going to be an awful lot of analogue keyboards, which I never played on tour. I remember one night everyone said they were going to a club

MICHAEL DEMPSEY: I half-joined while I was in the Cure. The Cure were on the same label, Fiction, so we’d meet in the bar at Morgan Studios. I also remember meeting them up in Edinburgh, though I can’t see how. I remember meeting them in a bedsit, and sitting round a Dansette record player, with Chris Parry, the Cure’s manager. The Cure were there as well, Robert and Lol, and we were listening to the record the they made, Boys Keep Swinging. Straight away I was impressed. Note: the versions of "And Then I Read a Book" and "Australia" are different on the 2000 and 2016 releases. ALAN RANKINE: I heard him a couple of weeks before I met him. He was a diffident character. Quite aloof. He seemed like a fish out of water. Coming from Dundee to Edinburgh he was quite self-preserving until I got to know him a bit better, but that took place over just a couple of days. The Associates are a band which was, and is, hard to define or pigeonhole, dipping a toe in post punk, experimenting with electronics and a variety of weird and wonderful instruments, some of their songs dripping with addictive pop hooks, while others verging on melancholic torch songs and the avant grade. The bands appeal stretched to a wide range of my peers in a variety of subcultures from my youth from punks to goths to pop music fans, their appeal was universal having created a band which intrigued and delighted in equal measure.
