About this deal

Water new plants frequently while they are establishing, and water all plants during dry periods through the growing season. When growing plants through biodegradable membrane, consider installinga seep hose underneath as rainwater penetration may be reduced. In this post, we share asimple, inexpensive DIY strawberry plant cage using PVC pipe and bird netting. We designed and installed it in about 20 minutes (but I didn’t time it….) With summer-fruiting strawberries, once cropping has finished, cut off the old leaves about 10cm (4in) above the crown to allow fresh leaves to develop. This isn’t necessary with autumn-fruiting plants – instead just remove the old leaves during the end-of-season clear-up

Strawberries are easy to grow in containers, such grow bags, hanging baskets, troughs and tubs. Although traditional strawberry pots look attractive, they can make it difficult to maintain healthy, productive plants. This is a cheaper way of making a net because it is faster and requires no work by hand. The technical term for this type of net is Raschel which is a type of warp knitting in which parallel monofilaments are looped together in a zigzig pattern along the length of the net. Our Woven net is made from two strands of 500 denier filament looped together which is then interlooped at the mesh corners. They grow best and produce the sweetest fruits in full sun, but will tolerate some shade. Alpine strawberries thrive in light shade. Cold-stored runners are available from late spring to early summer – these specially prepared runners will fruit 60 days after planting Starting from the bottom of one side, unroll netting and drape it up and over the PVC frame down to the ground on the other side.A great solution is built a support system to hold the netting up and over the strawberry plants. And that’s where we came up with our DIY strawberry plant cage. About Our DIY Strawberry Plant Cage While summer-fruiting and perpetual strawberries are only grown from runners or young plants, alpine strawberries can also be grown from seed indoors, although germination can be slow and unreliable: Dig a hole large enough to accommodate the roots and water well to soak the soil. Trim the roots lightly to 10cm (4in) if necessary, then spread them out in the hole.

Strawberries can be propagated from runners (plantlets produced on long stems) in late summer, but no later than early autumn:

Next year I might spray paint the PVC a nice color to blend in with the house and garden. Probably a dark green color. When to Erect a DIY Strawberry Plant Cage If the leaf surfaces have a white, powdery look in summer, this is powdery mildew. It can be a problem in hot, dry weather. Keep the soil moist and remove any affected leaves promptly. Space out your plants to avoid over-crowding and to improve air flow. Remove weeds, as they can spread the fungus. Undoubtedly the most effective way to protect strawberries from birds is to drape the strawberry patch with bird netting, an inexpensive plastic mesh with ¼-inch holes. Supported on a frame like a floating row cover, or held above the plants by stakes topped with upside-down flower pots, the netting will keep the birds from getting to most of the berries. You can buy bird netting at garden centers or online. There are so many steps in the K-beauty routine and there are so many products involved. It can be confusing, especially when it comes down to essence, serum and ampoule. For smaller gardens, 'everbearing' or 'perpetual' strawberries can provide a long strawberry season without taking up the space that several varieties would
