About this deal

I have tried stabilising solution and PVA but the problem keeps recurring. Any suggestions to prevent this happening would be helpful. Forgot to add that a descent, heavy grade lining paper may do the job and save you from skimming the walls If this be the case then scrape off any loos paint, allow to dry out over a period of a few weeks and paint again. You may well find this is an ongoing process or it may be isolated to one or two problem areas.

Hi, May I suggest for optimum performance that you use TRADE products rather than the retail equivalents. I've heard that you shouldn't apply stabilising solution to new render, but I'm not sure why? I have to do something about the chalky render before painting, don't I? It's been a year since the render was applied, so I guess it's not technically "new" anymore, it's just "unpainted". I live in France in an old house. Outside, we have the remains of surrounding fortified walls. Some are at least ten foot high. ... Looks more like a mortar than a render coat, more or less same ingredients just a different recipe ! Furthermore, the stabilising solution and PVA will both act to keep any moisture within the concrete, hence why you experiencing problems. The moisture will force its way out eventually.Painted a newly rendered wall last year and after allowing drying time, was also a bit dusty / sandy Even with say 1400 grade, good prep is required for a top finish but not every pin ***** and blemish needs attention as the paper will hide some of this If you are looking for a general use exterior primer or stabiliser, a great option is Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3. A subject that crops up a lot on the topic of exterior wall paint is ‘Stabilising Solution’ or ‘Primer’. Cure all root causes remove all moss & mould contamination by using a product such as Everbuild 404 Fungicidal Wash

The white dust is probably efflorescence – moisture in the stonework will draw out any salts and, provided this isn’t excessive, is perfectly normal. You may find that this process removes a lot of the loose particles on the surface, presenting you with a solid surface which can easily be primed with a thineed solution of masonry paint. This moisture may force itself out eventually and cause the paintwork to bubble and/or subsequently flake-off.Have you ever encountered lime paint on a ceiling? I’ve tried to roll the ceiling and it’s just pulling off in strips. Will a stabilising solution help? What Is Stabilising Solution? Dry and chalky areas can sometimes be primed with a watered down coat. But if the area has already been treated with a stabilising solution I would paint over this with unthinned masonry paint. In such cases, I always recommend that the wall is left exposed to weather for at least 12 months prior to painting. Bear in mind that the walls would also need to be fully dry and subsequent coatings would take a lot longer to dry. My new house was painted with masonry paint 6 months ago but now the paint is coming off in chunks. What can I do? I am planning to go over the loose areas with a wire brush and paint scraper. Would you say that it would be best to go over the areas that have the white dust build up with a stabilising solution, as the old paint is very flaky in these areas?

Always remember that applying some sort of exterior primer is one of the most important preparatory steps before applying any sort of paint. It provides both an increased quality and adhesion of paintwork, as well as protection to the wall itself. When Should You Use Stabilising Solution? It's just the time element, or more to the point, time versus money - skilled labour don't come cheap Allows painting of new render finishes and re-pointing repairs without alkaline contamination of the paint, which would otherwise delay painting by up to 2 months. Tools and equipment should be cleaned with warm soap and water immediately after use. Pump sprayers especially should be thoroughly flushed through with warm soapy water and then flushed with clean water until free of all residues. DO NOT allow to dry before cleaning.I personally wouldn’t use it unless the sand was really loose or the render is brittle. I do know lots of painters that do use it for these reasons on new render – almost like a mist coat and also for some other reasons. But I believe this can affect the coverage.
