About this deal

Closest focus distance is 0.34m (13in.) with a magnification of 1:3.8 at 70mm focal length and manual focus. At the wide end the new Sigma even goes down to 1:2.6 which is quite good but you have only 2cm (0.8in.) of working distance at minimum focus distance. At 70mm focal length the working distance is at least 16cm (6.3in.) which is much more usable. A magnification of 1:10 is achieved at 0.76m (2.5ft.) giving a working distance of 0.55m (1.8ft.) with lens hood attached. The Tamron is quite similar to the Sigma while the other lenses in this comparison produce their largest magnification of around 1:4 at 70mm focal length. [+]

Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM Review - Trusted Reviews

All of the high-volume lens makers (including Canon, Nikon, Sony, Tamron and Sigma) make one, and a big population of photographers has or wants one.

So, expect that whichever of these lenses you buy you’ll get wonderfully high resolution images. I probably wouldn’t make a lens choice based on resolution, here. Autofocus Performance Canon offers the stabilized RF 24-70mm f2.8 L IS USM (2400 EUR / 2300 USD) and the RF 28-70mm f2.0 L USM (3000 EUR/USD) which is unique in that it is the only full-frame 24-70mm zoom offering an f2.0 focal ratio. For that it is also much heavier than the rest at 1.4kg / 3.2lb. The Sigma has a considerably more-modern overall design, though the Tokina has the rear-positioned zoom ring I prefer. The design of Sigma's 24-70mm is more short and stubby than alternatives offered by other manufacturers. Although it's not any heavier than alternatives this wide 88.6mm diameter barrel makes the lens feel quite chunky. High quality plastics have been used in the construction and much of the exterior has a smart powder coating effect applied to it. Although this finish looks really good when new, I find it marks easily, even with light use.

All SIGMA lenses come with a 4-Year Warranty in the US, but only if you buy from SIGMA America directly or a SIGMA Authorized Dealer. Gray market importers undercut legitimate retailers, deceive well-intentioned customers, and sell products that are ultimately not eligible for warranty service. The minimum focusing distance is 18 cm at the wide-angle end. This allows you to come closer to a subject than the end of a hood to take photographs*. The maximum magnifications are 1:2.9 at the wide-angle end and 1:4.5 at the telephoto end, which provides a wider range of expression by close-up photography. Sigma has provided just the right amount of resistance on the manual-focusing ring, but the zoom ring is a shade on the heavy side. The focused-distance window includes markings that indicate depth-of-field for the 24mm focal-length setting but there are no markings for other focal lengths. The two Sigma lenses perform similarly, with the Art having slightly less barrel distortion between 24mm and 28mm and slightly more pincushion from 35mm to 70mm. However, it’s only likely to be noticeable above ±0.5% with linear picture elements running parallel and close to the edge of the frame. Sigma's Global Vision lenses get a classification of "A", "C" or "S", representing a primary Sigma-intended use of "Artistic", "Contemporary" and "Sports". In the real world, lens defects do not exist in isolation with spherical aberration and spherochromatism generally found, at least to some degree, along with axial CA.

Distortion

Especially in the 35mm and 70mm samples, a very significant sharpness increase is seen at f/4 where the razor sharp term could be applied across the entire focal length range. A lesser 1.5 stops of corner shading is present in the 35-70mm range, again with a wide open aperture. AF-operation of the new Sigma is inaudible from the outside or if you record video with the built-in microphone. And as you pull focus, you’ll notice no focus breathing at all: the image simply keeps its magnification at closer focusing distances. This should make videographers happy.

24-70mm F2.8 DG OS HSM – Sigma UK

However, at 107.6 x 88 mm (4.2 x 3.49 in) and 1.02 kg (36 oz), it’s quite a bit bigger and heavier than the lens it replaces, which measures 95 x 89 mm (3.73 x 3.5 in) and weighs 0.79 kg (27.87 oz).

Comparatively, this number is better than the predecessor lens and similar to much of the competition with Sony and Nikon having better numbers on the board. Optical stabilization is a great asset to the already valuable focal length range and wide aperture of this lens. If you can accept the loss of stabilization and performance wide-open, the Tokina has an overall performance similar to the Sigma lens, yet boasts slightly higher peak sharpness, excellent transmission, and good control of lateral chromatic aberration. Conclusion: Good value for money for Nikon users Adding OS significantly increases this lens' already great versatility and especially at f/4, this lens delivers very impressive image sharpness.
