About this deal

But we feel our efforts were worth it. Based on our rigorous testing, we found the best water changer available… The components to make an improved Python water changer are available separately and I will help to show you how to put one together. Here is your shopping list: Unfortunately, Lee’s Ultimate Gravel Vac fell short where it counts – it had the shorted gravel tube of any water changer we tested. Where most gravel tubes measured at least 10 inches, Lee’s was a paltry 8.5. This all plugs together and I drained the tanks really easily. When I tried to fill the tanks the pressure got to much and the garden tap adaptor did hold resulting in quite a lot of water everywhere. I guess it is roughly 3/4" but not quite the same thread.

I may have to add a some extra length to the bottom to make the siphon function but, frankly, as it is, I can’t always get the Aqueon to siphon, given the lousy water pressure here, so, not really a deal breaker if it won’t siphon very well. I should be able to drain the upper tanks with it anyway, just drop the tap end to floor level and let it run naturally. Father Christmas delivered a Python water changer but I am struggling to find the right adaptor I need (mainly because there seems to be no documentation as to what size any of the threads are...) IMPORTANT: Please note, the brass adaptor shown in some photographs of the Python products are found on the US versions only and is not included in the UK version. The UK version comes with an equivalent plastic adaptor which fits standard 3/4 inch (19mm) threads found on most UK outdoor taps, as well as a rubber universal adaptor. The good news is that you can get parts to make your own and you can have the ultimate in flexibility for hose length, valves, and the fill/siphon fitting in your tank! Building Your Own Python Type Water Changer:

You would be forgiven for thinking that Lee’s Ultimate Gravel Vac was a differently colored Python… All the parts look very similar. The key difference is that feels like a budget product, and this is reflected in both the materials and hosing used. Has anyone else achieved UK success with this? I can't believe it's so difficult to achieve something that should be so simple. I’ve been keeping fish for over 30 years and currently have 4 different aquariums – it’s an addiction. I’m here to teach you everything there is to know about fishkeeping. Presume when i refill the tank i put prime in to treat full tank volume just before i turn the tap on to refill?

The aerator in the center of your faucet head needs to be removed so the No Spill Clean N' Fill can attach to the threads on your faucet. If the brass adapter that comes with the cleaning system doesn't fit your faucet, you will need to take that aerator to a local hardware/plumbing store and find out what the threads are on your faucet to find the correct adapter.

From plastic fittings that did not hold up to regular use to hosing that gives off a strong plastic smell and easily kinks. Sure, as a water changer, it’s functional, but based on our testing, we expect that you will need to replace it within a year of regular use. I built two different tank devices. The first was simply a ‘wand’ that is comprised of the hose adaptor, some PVC pipe and one 45º fitting. I use this hand held to spot remove detris from specific places in the tank. Most of the time, this is the fill device I use. I decided to use 1/2″ pipe as it seems this will be plenty of flow for our little aquarium and should work fine even on a larger tank. See the picture for the components I used and how they go together. Just cut pipe sections that are appropriate and test fit. You mention 1/2″ pvc is good enough for your little aquarium (and probably larger ones). Would a larger pipe diameter make a difference to the gph or is it kind of capped out by the water pressure coming from your sink?

I’ve also broken one gravel tube, the threaded male end snapped right off the tube and the plastic compression nut started to disintegrate so the hose kept slipping off it. Mind, this is the only time the gravel tube broke, whereas 3 faucet pumps have bitten the dust in the same length of time. Siphon Pump: If you ever had a waterbed as a kid, you recognize this device. It has a female connection at top that you attach to your faucet adaptor. The valve is at the bottom to switch from siphon to fill mode. Out the side is a standard male garden hose thread. Again, Python sells their pump separately , or you can search for a ‘ Waterbed Mattress Fill & Drain Kit “. It looks like the waterbed fill kit comes with a plastic adaptor so you can make do with that and save some cash.

The Python Water Changer – How It Works:

While it is reassuring that all 5 manufacturers believe that this is the best design for a water changer, it made life considerably more difficult when it came to ranking them from best to worst. Would normally take me just over an hour to do all the water changes of @70% and all the jobs done like filter maintenances on 4 or 5 tanks (two 100+ litres tanks and 3 nano tanks 20 to 50 litres).

Isn't there a way to solder the brass piece with the USA/NPT thread to a brass BSP thread piece? Even if it doesn't fit snugly the solder will fix it.An alternative would be an electric pump on the end of a hose to get the water lifted to a higher elevation, say to dump into a sink. This is a solution you would have to rig up yourself, and would be complicated. I am unsure if it’s by design, but the model we tested came covered in a fine white powder – not something we wanted in our aquarium. I made a DiY python hose buying hose attachments from local hardware stores or online for not a lot of money and 10 meters of clear hose from LFS , attached with a universal 600lph pump.
