About this deal

We take a look at Pioneer DJ’s most affordable DJ controller to date, the DDJ-200. With no audio connections and designed to connect to your phone via Bluetooth this little controller will no doubt turn heads in the DJ community. But aimed at the beginners who care more about ease of use than performance features, could this be the controller that launches the next generation of DJ? Let’s find out! The Pioneer DJ DDJ 200, the cheapest and smallest controller from Pioneer to date. The Hardware Great equipment at a great price I bought this for my son who is starting out mixing. For someone who's only ever mixed using turntables it was surprisingly easy to set up and get going. I wasnt actually expecting all that much for the price but was seriously impressed. The only reason I cant give 5 stars is the limitations of features on the various apps without paying a premium. The Pioneer DJ DDJ 200 is an extremely easy-to-operate USB bus-powered controller that’s super compact, lightweight, and cheap; with innovative mobile app mixing features.

The DDJ-200 does not feature pad mode selection buttons so for changing the behavior of the pad section mid-performance you will have to use your mobile device’s screen. There is no dedicated sound FX section on the DDJ-200. For the simplest connection to your source, go for a wireless, Bluetooth connection. Or, if you prefer to be wired in, simply plug the DDJ-200 into your PC, Mac, tablet or smartphone with a USB cable, or connect to your iPad or iPhone with a Lightning cable and start mixing your music using the compatible DJ software or app of your choice. As basic as controllers get, The Pioneer DDJ 200 doesn’t have the best build that’s mostly made of plastic. What can you expect at this price point? For what you pay, you get a whole lot more than you bargained for. It’s still got the pro-layout and feel of top-tier Pioneer DJ DJ controller. Portability is the controller’s main design strength. The Pioneer DDJ 200 is minuscule and featherweight compared to a standard DJ controller. For those who don’t want to use a computer for mixing, DJs can plug in their mobile device directly into the smart DJ controller with the help of the WeDJ, djay, or edjing mix applications.

Quick response

The app does standard mixing stuff like loops, hot cues, and pre-cueing. It’s also got fantastic performance additions.

The DDJ-200 doesn’t feature a microphone input so you won’t be able to use your mic with the device unless you are using an external audio mixer. The conclusion:It has powerful performance features, like 16 pads with 8 modes, large jog wheels, and immense effects. Depending on your app and device combo, you can also mix via streaming music services. Compatible services include Beatport LINK, SoundCloud Go+, Deezer, TIDAL and Beatsource LINK.

Plus, a DJ controller typically comes bundled with a copy of a DJ software to mix off a computer. Instead of buying everything separately, which can get pricey, DJs get an all-in-one system cheap. The faders feel a little cheap, but they are relatively smooth and tactile. There is no gain knobs on each channel, which still perplexes me. A mixer without gain controls?!?! That’s how you know it’s a super entry-level model. It has a digital sampler that uses the controller’s 16 performance pads to trigger the sounds. My friends have hours and hours of fun mixing with the samplers. The DDJ-200 also doesn’t feature channel gain control knobs (trim knobs) so you won’t be able to tweak and fine tune the gain of each mixer channel on the device itself. The LED channel level indicators are also not present on the DDJ-200 while the DDJ-400 has small channel level indicator lights for each mixer channel. The DDJ 200 is powered via the USB B port on the rear. Using the included USB cable, you can use any 5v USB adaptor to power the unit on, we find spare phone chargers work great. Laptop users won’t have to worry about powering the DDJ 200 as the USB cable used to connect to the laptop also charges at the same time. What Equipment Do You Really Need To DJ? – Gear Recommendations Both devices feature only 2 mixer channels. Operation is not guaranteed on all computers, even if all the required operating environment conditions indicated here are fulfilled. In conclusion, the Pioneer DDJ-400 is a better choice hardware wise and overall a better choice for a beginner. It offers much more for a little more money, has a standalone Rekordbox software license bundled with it and is more comfortable to use. All that while still keeping a somewhat portable form factor. Is it worth getting a used DDJ-400? Depending on the DJ app you use, you can stream sounds from huge sources of music including Beatport LINK, SoundCloud Go+, TIDAL, Beatsource LINK and more.

Prices valid in stores (all including VAT) until close of business on 1st November 2023. (Some of these web prices are cheaper than in-store, so please mention that you've seen these offers online.) The WeDJ app features might be considered cheating because they automate too much of the DJing process. The DDJ-200 is much smaller and much more compact than the DDJ-400 as it is made with mobile devices in mind. It is meant to be used with smartphones and tablets and carried around in a bag. While targeting mobile devices the DDJ-200 can also be used with the Rekordbox software on your PC or your laptop. Many actions are meant to be performed in-app only and there are no shortcut buttons for them on the DDJ-200 (such as choosing different sound FX and performance pad modes). These features get a DJ’s feet wet into manual mixing, but they don’t train the DJ on how to do it.However, what is unique is that by using the computers mouse, you can access of Rekordbox’s extensive performance features. This means you can even use Keyboard mode with the DDJ 200 just by pressing on the pad modes on the screen. Very impressive stuff even if it doesn’t necessarily appeal to the beginners who will be buying this controller. It’s kind of a bummer that each mixing app doesn’t support all the streaming services. The corporate shills won’t let all the platforms cross over. You’ve got to select the DJing app that suits your flavor of streaming. The DDJ-SB3 still automates a lot of DJing mechanics, with the FX Fade feature to smooth out the transitions between songs. Choose from eight combinations of four FX Fade patterns. There are no streaming services available just yet in Rekordbox, so local files are all you can play with, but that could change very soon. The Rekordbox integration is a nice touch and allows laptop DJ’s to access all of Rekordbox’s fantastic performance features for very little money indeed! In Conclusion
