Minimum burn time of 5 hours in REACTIVE LIGHTING® mode (STANDARD level), built to power through long activities

Petzl SWIFT RL Headtorch review | Trek and Mountain Petzl SWIFT RL Headtorch review | Trek and Mountain

The reactive sensor also reacts to what you are looking at, whether a map close up or into the distance. I’ve noticed this most when cycling and the headlight crosses beams with bike lights. Or, when the lights illuminate road signs. It all sounds very promising, but how does it actually handle in the field? Keep reading below to find out. In truth, and from what I have discovered when discussing the reactive technology with others, I think the reactive beam is far better for solo running or when you are walking. The pace of walking means that if the beam dims it is not so much of an issue compared to running. When running I usually require a bright beam to show me the way ahead. Digging down into it in a much more serious way, the product’s two-part construction ensures first-rate stability during dynamic and intense activities such as mountaineering, trail running and skiing. Move about as much as you want and this thing will continue to light the way for you. The main negatives come from the complications with the reactive lighting. There are a lot of moments when the light dims but you don’t want it to. Saying that, on standard 550 lumens, the maximum battery time is only two hours. You will need to carry a spare battery if you plan to be out for longer. But when in reactive beam mode the battery use is far less. A positive point about the reactive technology includes a good reaction to lighting up things in the near-distance (such as a map) and then in the far distance. Also, when you are looking at someone else who is also wearing a head torch, the reactive beam dims so it doesn’t blind the other person.

We’ll start off the ‘Features’ section where we ended the previous one. The Swift RL’s ‘Reactive Lighting’ technology results in a longer burn time (or battery life), and requires less manual adjustment. The light sensor automatically adjusts brightness and beam pattern depending on the current level of light in the environment. This optimises battery usage and keeps the head torch going for longer. If you’d prefer something a bit more traditional, you can switch to a ‘Standard Lighting’ mode. The thought behind the Swift is that you have two headlamps in one, a light/bright “standard” headlamp or a light/bright/extended burn time reactive headlamp, but I don’t think I’ll use the reactive mode as much as I had hoped I would. The SWIFT's brightness and burn time is a little complex, and is best broken down into two categories: standard lighting and reactive lighting. The easiest way to tell is by putting your finger over the sensor (right next to the light beam) and if the brightness increases, it’s in reactive mode. But, in action, this slows you down and isn’t something you’d want to do whilst on the move. The standard light seems to be more concentrated and far-reaching, whilst the reactive light seems to be more dispersed. Other head torches have modes to switch between dispersed and concentrated beams, which is useful. We've already run through the various modes in Brightness and Burn Time, so I'll avoid repeating myself on that front.
