About this deal

This is a photo of me being so happy to use my new rain cape on a ride from Amsterdam to Leiden. Rain capes are THE BEST! Once again it performed great! It did its job perfectly. The claim of 100% waterproof held up. I had my doubts, but this poncho really will keep you bone dry with it on.

Rain Capes: Cleverhood vs People’s Poncho – Bromptoning Rain Capes: Cleverhood vs People’s Poncho – Bromptoning

Urbane was selling the Brooks rain cape, but we didn’t like it, so we headed to The Spacing Store to try on the Cleverhoods. (Note: Urbane now sells AGU rain ponchos that look pretty good, but we haven’t tried those yet.) Compared to most rain gear, rain capes allow airflow so you won’t get sweaty. The bottom of the cape stays open so that air can move. You’ll receive compliments wearing this cape whether you’re on or off the bike. It’s a classy look. Yeah, OK, you might look a bit like Quasimodo, but at least you’ll be a dry and warm Quasimodo. Besides, you don’t want to blend into the crowds when you have such a cool poncho to show off, do you?

How does it feel while cycling?

A traditional poncho won’t keep your arms protected while you hold onto a bike’s handlebars. Cycling rain capes are created to keep even your arms and hands dry when you reach for the handlebars.

Ponchos for Commute 10 of the Coolest Rain Capes and Ponchos for Commute

There will be a day as a bike commuter when you’ll need to ride in the rain. When the rain comes you’ll want to be prepared! The price for more expensive capes isn’t always only because they’re more stylish. Many of the more expensive bicycling capes offer features that the cheaper versions don’t have. Do the work on the front end to make sure you buy a cape that fits your specific needs. Stylish and Hip –One of the reasons I wanted to try out this poncho was simply because it looks cool. It has a stylish look, and you’re guaranteed to get compliments while wearing it. Too many other ponchos and rain capes make you look like you’re wearing a trash bag. I won’t lie, I now get a little excited for rain so that I can wear this poncho while riding. It’s not ergonomically designed for cycling (the way some of the other capes on this list are). So, you can also use it hiking or camping. It’s available in an impressive ten colours, the brightest being ‘orange’. And the ‘universe’ colour option cannot be ignored – unique, strange and frankly, inspired. With five sizes to choose from, ranging from small to XX large, there’s no doubt about this poncho being the right fit. It’s also super-light, weighing a mere 295 g. I started researching the various poncho’s and rain capes on the market, but settled The People’s Poncho. Their ponchos were stylish, made for cycling, and apparently would keep me dry. The only way to know if it lived up to the hype was to buy one. We live in a country where it rains around 50% of the time. Love it or hate it, if we only cycled in fair weather, we’d be limited to cycling for around 195 days of the year. It’s crafted out of waterproof polyester that is durable and seam sealed. You won’t need to worry about water getting through.

The only downside of the People’s Poncho is the cost. It’s not the cheapest way to keep yourself dry while cycling, but in my opinion its benefits are worth the extra money. Their Octavia Rain Cape has a pretty unique look to it because of its translucent All Weather Shell stretch fabric. The fabric is very lightweight, breathable and it doesn’t restrict your movement on the bike. It’s also great for shielding you from the wind. I love the Cleverhood’s hood! My face is soaked from the cheeks down, but my eyes are dry thanks to that hood.

The Features of this Cycling Poncho

They’re easy to put on. Simply slip them over your head in a matter of seconds. Ideal if you’re caught in a sudden shower. The SaphiRose boasts itself as a ‘3-in-1 multi-function’ poncho. Not only is it a waterproof cloak, but it can also be used as an awning cloth or a tent ground sheet mat. Ideal for those wet camping trips.

And they do say there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing. An old cliché, but true. There‘s no reason why we can’t cycle for work and pleasure, all year round, just because of the Gulf Stream. The Spacing Store has all three Cleverhood rain capes: the classic Cleverhood, the CleverZipster, and the Cleverlite. This really is a superior garment, which is reflected in the price. Not only does it offer exceptional quality, but you’ll look great, too. I can honestly say that The People’s Poncho has become a firm favourite in my wet weather gear and will be sure to go on some adventures with me in the future. I haven’t tried it on my (clashing pink) Brompton yet, but will write a post on that when the time comes. There are obviously different needs when it comes to pedalling around. Ponchos offer more ventilation simply by their loose design, and if it is cold, they can go over any layers you’re wearing without restricting your movements. They’re not great for extreme weather. The baggy fit means they flap in the wind. Apart from being irritating, if it’s very windy it’s likely that rain will be blown underneath and you’ll be soaked. You might also feel like you’re going to take off. Make sure any cape you have has a feature to keep it from turning into a sail in the wind. You may not care about looking like a superhero, but you’ll feel the extra drag.
