Adaptational Villainy: While he's nice enough in the movie, the PC game's version of Dr. Jekyll has him collaborating with Hyde to rule the world. Macaulay Culkin as Richard Tyler: A young 10-year-old boy who seems to have a fear of everything and runs his life based on safety statistics. Culkin is the only actor in the film to portray his character in both live-action and animation. The main character is someone you can really root for. He's a nerd and a coward, but he has a lot of potential too be something more. You'll be rooting for him the whole way. I feel like we don't really make movies about the beauty of imagination any more. Do we? Am I just being old and stupid? Are there movies since 2000 that are in theaters that are just straight up imagination is wonderful, reading is wonderful? Let me know if you have ones. Because it's summer, I had time, and I've always wanted to read all of the books referenced in this 1994 animation classic.Whoopi Goldberg as Fantasy: A fairy-styled lavender fairy tale book. She can be opprobrious, aggressive, and hotheaded.

Also "Dream Away" by Babyface& Lisa Stansfield which plays over the end credits. Unlike Whatever You Imagine, it wasn't co-written by James Horner. False Crucible: Richard learns that everything he went through was a test to get him to face his fears. Tightly wound and compelling ... appropriate for an older middle school and high school audience. VERDICT: Highly recommended.” – School Library Journal Stealth Pun: The dragon eating Richard. Kind of clever when you consider the dragon is supposed to be Richard's fears incarnate and manifested into physical form. Get it? He was consumed by fear?

Strengths and weaknesses: This book had several strong points: something of a survey of multiple genres, very nicely illustrated, and a book that manages to promote reading to young readers, however, the book was admittedly somewhat derivative. Todd Strasser is an American author of more than 130 novels for adults, young-adults, and middle graders.

Adventure inspects several books including The Mysterious Island and Kidnapped before spotting 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and summoning the giant squid to help Richard get over his phobia of heights. All of the stories in this book are awesome and I loved the way it was written. I love the character Horror :) Finally, the plot was very original. I think it's good that hollywood is getting kids too read. This is a very good introduction to some of literature's greatest classics. Just Eat Him: The "Alive and Whole" subtype is enacted by the dragon. It could easily incinerate Richard but prefers to do this instead.Davis, Sandi (January 1, 1995). "Oklahoman Movie Critics Rank Their Favorites for the Year "Forrest Gump" The Very Best, Sandi Declares". The Oklahoman . Retrieved July 20, 2020. The movie is and always will be an absolute favourite of mine and unjustly a underrated gem of the 90's. The books were very interesting characters too, and Whoopi Goldberg did a great job as Fantasy. "Adventure" did a nice job too. Additionally, both Nimoy and Welker voiced the character Galvatron in Transformers (with Nimoy voicing him in the 1986 film, and Welker voicing him in the television series and again in Transformers: Age of Extinction and Transformers: The Last Knight). The animation in the film was produced by Turner Feature Animation, [2] headed by David Kirschner and supervising animator Bruce W. Smith and recently spun off from Hanna-Barbera. The crew included animators who were veterans of productions such as An American Tail (1986) (also produced by David Kirschner and composed by James Horner), The Land Before Time (1988). This was one of the first films to feature live-action, traditional animation, and CGI animation all together. One scene involving a computer-generated dragon made from paint was used, a challenge for the filmmakers. All of the fictional works featured in the film were created and first published before January 1, 1923, making them a part of the public domain in most countries. The theme songs in the film are " Dream Away", sung by Babyface and Lisa Stansfield, and "Whatever You Imagine", sung by Wendy Moten.

Action Girl: When the situation calls for it, like in the Long John Silver section, Fantasy can be one very dangerous book. Loony Librarian: Mr. Dewey, the "loony" part of his character provided by Large Ham Christopher Lloyd. If too generic a reference, I did not include it on the list. This is the case for the generic “Ghost Stories” that scare Richard Tyler and Co., as well as for the faun/satyr and fairies that appear in the Fantasy section. The dragon in the Fantasy section could also easily be a reference to any number of stories. I couldn't be sure, so the first reference to St. George and the Dragon remains on the list where the title is first seen. The Assimilator: The dragon shape-shifts into a monstrous painting abomination that absorbs Richard into the worlds of Horror, Adventure and Fantasy. Changing him into an illustration, just so it can devour him later. Christopher Lloyd as Mr. Dewey, the unconventional librarian and caretaker of a seemingly abandoned library.Shown Their Work: In keeping with the book, Mr. Hyde is not only smaller than Jekyll, he's leaner than him too. Casci's original screenplay included a story arc for the protagonist, Richard Tyler (played by Macaulay Culkin), who begins the tale as a boy who hates reading, but by the end of the film, learns to love reading. The revised screenplay by Contreras and Kirschner omitted the reading-themed story arc, instead emphasizing the boy's journey from cowardice to courage. An absolute pleasure to read after being so fond of the movie. I never knew while growing up that there was a book. Right Behind Me: Adventure starts ranting about how the dragon doesn't pose a single threat to him, just as said dragon is behind him.
