The author's greatest strength lies in her sensitive and relatable description of the relationship between sisters Leila and Max's mother Yasmin' ibut on the other hand, i couldnt stand the characters. the two sisters and their husbands are some of the most unsympathetic people i have ever read about. i didnt root for any of them and i didnt care about the outcome of the legal case either way because i just didnt care about them. i guess you could argue that KA wrote them very well, which is why they evoked such a strong response, but i just found them unenjoyable to read about. Society members who enjoy reading fiction will love this book which is a very clever story within several stories, with the abdication crisis at the center of a fascinating drama with very interesting and fully developed cast of characters. The Windsors themselves appear only once in a very brief cameo appearance. These are questions that will be floating in your mind as you read Kia Abdullah’s latest offering, Next of Kin. The story is more complicated than it first appears, and told in three parts: the event, the courtroom trial, and the aftermath. Was the aunt responsible? Was it accidental or did she deliberately leave Max in the car as she dealt with a work emergency? Leila insists she simply forgot but the prosecution claims it was a deliberate act. What are the complicating familial relationships that come into play? There is some predictability to the story and an (intended?) plot hole, but a good read nonetheless as a sneaky, but handsome vainglorious man takes advantage of the naive and seeks vengeance against the (deceitful) arrogant to save his own skin from an evil underground operative.
