About this deal

I am very pleased with the way the colour has worked in the book but the credit really goes to Barrington Stoke’s art department. When I originally drew the book it existed only in a very muddy navy blue and a rusty brown which was obviously never going to work in the children’s market. This is a superb book for children aged between 4-8, as it encourages young readers to think about the challenges faced by the character – great for comprehension. The questions allow readers to reflect on the story and gives them a deeper understanding into the experiences faced by refugees.

In this increasingly complex and difficult world we live in, I've been looking for books that help to explain and support younger readers. They have often proven of immense value to myself and the dual appeal of texts like this to both adult and child cannot be ignored. Step towards children's books if you're struggling to find answers; there's something to be said for the pure poetics and the stylistic truths that can exist in this space. World Refugee Day is celebrated on June 20 of each year. It's designed to honour all refugees around the globe and recognise their strength and courage. I was instantly in love with the cover, the art on it was pretty. It still took me a bit before I actually read it though. Nothing against refugees, I am happy that we can give these people a chance for a safe life, a happy life. But there is just SO MUCH about refugees, books about them (from picture books to YA), or authors just moving refugee characters in their books. At first I was quite interested in reading these books, but after months of seeing it everywhere... it just gets too much. Sorry. :( Since asylum can be a confusing issue for children (and even adults), here are some books that explore what it really means to flee your home and have to start your life over.My name is not Refugee’ is available to view as a 3D walkthrough using the player below. This virtual experience enables you to explore the physical exhibition as if you were there, at any time, remotely on a digital device. A young boy discusses the journey he is about to make with his mother. They will leave their town, she explains, and it will be sad but also a little bit exciting. They will have to say goodbye to friends and loved ones, and that will be difficult. They will have to walk and walk and walk, and although they will see many new and interesting things, it will be difficult at times too. This is not just children’s book. The content in this book imply so many things that we all need to think and know about. As I was reading this book, I was stunned by the illustrations and texts which were clear and concise. I spent a few minutes reading it but I could not put it down. I held the book in my hands for a while. The author’s viewpoint elicited my sympathy to their situation. No one wants to be in their shoes, and no one thinks they'll ever be put in that situation until they find themselves in it. How do you deal with it? Especially when you have kids? How do you balance the reality of the situation while still trying to protect and shield your children from any harm?

This book meant well, and was well-received (I suspect 100% because of the subject matter rather than the execution), but, when it comes down to it, it completely misrepresents refugees, the situations they face, and the discrimination that's always there. Kate Milner is both an author and an illustrator, now based in Bedfordshire. In 2016, she won the V&A Illustration Award for her beautiful artworks, seen in My Name is Not Refugee. Kate also worked in teaching and caring, before becoming a children’s author and illustrator.A lesson exploring the picture book My Name is Not Refugee with comprehension questions for each spread.

the story is told using concepts children understand and can easily identify with: boredom, fear of separation, playing, making friends, precious toys and pets; read the title and discuss the cover: do you know what a refugee is? What do you see on the cover? What do you think this story will be about? Education Shed Ltd, Severn House, Severn Bridge, Riverside North, Bewdley, Worcestershire, UK, DY12 1AB My name is not Refugee’ has been curated by Elizabeth Curry, Münevver Gülsen Ülker, Samia, Diego Robirosa and Mr and Mrs Al-Chahin, working together with many more clients of and volunteers from Refugee Action Colchester. A powerful and moving exploration that draws the young reader into each stage of the journey, inviting the chance to imagine the decisions he or she would make.On winning the Klaus Flugge Prize 2018, Kate Milner said:“I felt absolutely amazed and delighted when I heard that I’d won. I was very, very pleased to be shortlisted but I explained to everyone at the time that there was absolutely no chance of me winning. I was quite clear about this. When I got the good news I was alone in the house apart from my son who was still asleep. I was beside myself with delight; he didn’t get to stay asleep long. My Name is Not Refugee is an incredibly powerful picture book aimed at both children and kids alike. children write a book review of the book, mentioning the name of the author/illustrator, summarising the story and explaining what they liked and didn’t like about it; I have always drawn pictures. Most children stop around the age of ten or eleven, I never did. Over the years I have worked as a designer, I have painted pub signs and taught art and made illustrations for business magazines but it was the fantastic MA course in Children’s Book Illustration at Anglia Ruskin that really turned me into an illustrator.
