About this deal

Malamander is a thrilling sea-side adventure that moves on at pace. With chapters that end on cliff-hangers it is a very difficult book to put down as you find yourself desperate to know what will happen next. In the author’s notes we learn that Taylor lives by the sea and enjoys everything about the beach. His connection to the seaside and love for the beach shine through in his writing. Mrs. Fossil tells the children about the legend of the malamander. She says the creature lays an egg and then “devours it.” Since the egg has the power to grant wishes, she explains, many people have sought it. However, she tells them, “Every single one of them . . . gobbled up by the beastie!”

Eels tries to get the egg from Violet. Eels “grabs the egg with one hand and punches Violet in the face with the other.” She falls into the cold water. Herbie dives in after her and wonders “for a moment if I’ve died without noticing” due to the “cold and dark.” When he finds her, “she gasps and coughs.”Common Sense is the nation's leading nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of all kids and families by providing the trustworthy information, education, and independent voice they need to thrive in the 21st century. I would have liked to see more determination and better decision making in the main characters; however, all the characters in general are funny and interesting. In this resource we have included a blank resource for your class to complete and a reference resource for the teacher. Twelve-year-old twins Maudie and Arthur’s world comes crashing in when their explorer dad is reported dead in his mission to get to South Polaris, and they race to restore the family name.A real edge-of-your-seat Victoriana romp. It has taken me way too long to get around to reading Malamander. It has been sitting in my ‘To Be Read’ pile for a while and having heard so many brilliant things about it and its sequel, Gargantis, I felt compelled to take action. This is a fantastic fantasy mystery that is both thrilling and creepy in equal measure.

Mrs. Fossil explains that the town doctor has prevented her from “languishing in a hospital bed somewhere, pumped full of goodness-knows-what.” How are the main characters Herbert and Violet similar? How are they different? Which one are you more like? Eels tells Boat Hook Man, “It’s not my fault you didn’t have the wit or the will to use the egg properly.” Your class will read the chapter and reflect on and complete the inference style questions using their knowledge and understanding.it includes words such as acrid, orientate, judders, iridescent, engulfed to name but a few. Your class will look at definitions and place the words into the sentences given, in the context of the story. It is filled with tension and with danger lurking at every turn as Herbie and the strange girl race around the town searching for clues and trying to uncover the mystery of her missing parents. Along the way they encounter an eclectic mix of characters, some trustworthy, some shady and some are downright dangerous. People that at first seem friends become foes and foes become friends - you are never quite sure exactly who someone is and Taylor keeps readers guessing right until the end. The character names have been carefully chosen, as have the place names and it all makes for delightful reading. Herbie assumes Eels believes “no one in their right mind would crawl into such a small and dismal hole.” Very comprehensive list of quality vocabulary in such a fabulous book. Thank you for all the time and work this must have taken. Don’t be shy about asking someone to read your story, if you aren’t sure about something. Writing is meant to be read, so involving readers while you are still writing can really help.

This book introduces a diverse new detective duo in Herbie and Violet, and is told with such neat storytelling and surprising phrases it would be a joy to read aloud

Did we miss something on diversity?

In Eels’ house, Herbie sees “an empty bottle of whiskey” on the floor near Violet. She insists she did not drink it and asks him, “Do you think I drink whiskey?” I really liked both the cover of the book and the illustrations made by Tom Booth and I think it is an appropriate way to show the reader the most remarkable moments of the story. The town map that can be found at the beginning of the book is a very useful tool. In the book it’s violet trying to find her parents as they went missing when she was a baby ( like Herbert ) . But the place herby worked at once catered for the father and mother of violet which is how Herbert met violet. One of my favourite parts is when violet sees her parents on the beach after spotting the unctuous malamander in the ocean. My favourite character in this book was Violet as she was determined to find her parents or what happened to them. One of the things that got me hooked it always ended on a cliff hanger and you wanted to read more. Boat Hook Man corners Herbie and Violet in the fish shed. They try to escape using a rope, by jumping from the window to a suspended fishing net. Herbie misses the first opportunity for release and is left “dangling, four stories up.” He thinks, “At this point, I can let go of the rope and probably break both my legs, or I can stay dangling where I am and be filleted like a small lemon-flavored herring in a Lost-and-Foundery’s cap.” Boat Hook Man sees Violet on the beach and “grabs Violet by her collar, lifting her in the air.” She has a hard time speaking because of where he grabbed her. She is left “clutching her throat.”
