Spec-wise, the 2022 Legion 7i is built on the latest and most powerful Intel and Nvidia hardware available to date. The Core i9-12900HX is the top-performance mobile processor in Intel’s Alder Lake 12th-gen platform, with 16 Cores and 24 Threads. It is a hybrid design with 8 High-Performance and dual-threaded Cores, and 8 extra Efficiency cores, which work together in the various loads. The design and thermal module of this Legion allow the processor to run at up to ~115W of sustained power in demanding CPU loads. W (~3 h 33 min of use)– heavy browsing in Chrome, Better Performance Mode, screen at 50%, Wi-Fi ON; All in all, the 2022 Legion 7i is an excellent performer and definitely a step-up from the previous 2021 generations. The culprit are the high CPU thermals in sustained loads, as well as to some extent the fact that this design is not as CPU-powerful as other Intel HX models from other brands. Across all of our performance tests, this laptop achieved scores that put it well above almost every entry in our best gaming laptops list. In our 3DMark tests, the Legion 7 scored 52,201 in Night Raid, 23,811 in Fire Strike and 10,709 in Time Spy whereas the Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 (the device in our number one spot) only achieved 43,645, 21,211 and 9,333 in each test respectively. Grand Theft Auto V and Far Cry: New Dawn also saw the Legion 7i outclassing its competition at 1080p, although not by as wide of a margin. For instance, the Legion’s 1080p Grand Theft Auto V benchmark averaged 139 fps while the Alienware’s averaged 129 fps and the Asus’ averaged 111 fps.
I wouldn't get too hung up on 2dB difference though. For fan noise, I take a reading and record average sound over a 1 minute span. The hi/low range during that period is sometimes 4dB depending on the distance I hold the mic, fan fluctuation, etc. I just report my results as is, but it could easily be a couple dB different if I were to try it again. You do get is the option to easily switch off the LEGION RGB logo with FN+L, if you want to. However, I couldn’t find a way to disable the lightbars independently of the keyboard, though – not sure if that’s not an option, or I just couldn’t figure it out. You can manually customize each light zone in Spectrum, but there’s no OFF option of any kind. Update: If interested, here are my thoughts on the updated 2023 Lenovo Legion Pro 7i and Pro 7 models. And here’s my detailed review of the 2023 Lenovo Legion Pro 7i series in the RTX 4080 model, as well as our review of the top-specced RTX 4090 Legion Pro 7i variant. Design and construction The Lenovo Legion 7i had a battery life of about 5 hours on our in-house battery test, which is within expectations for a gaming laptop with these kinds of specs. For instance, the Alienware x17 is another Intel Core i9/RTX 3080 laptop that actually had about a half hour less battery life on the same test. That said, we do occasionally see exceptions, such as the 5:58 battery life we saw on the AMD-powered Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE. While we got those numbers with just one of that laptop’s two displays turned on, the Zephyrus only had 5 fewer minutes of battery life than the Legion when we tested it again with both displays running. On the other hand, this 16Core i9 implementation is no match for other Intel or AMD current platforms. For what is worth, the Ryzen 9 6900HX Legion 7 should also score around 2400 points in this test, so nowhere close to the Intel HX models. It felt more natural to have it under the keys I predominantly type on.
