About this deal

Perhaps she got lost in all the space in her dressing room, which is next to the stage,’ said Martita quite clearly. Ooh,’ Daisy has just hissed under her breath from the seat next to me. ‘Uncle Felix will be annoyed, won’t he? We were supposed to be safe from crimes here! Serve him right for treating us like children.’ Girls, let me introduce the company to you. Our Romeo is Mr Lysander Tollington.’ Inigo waved towards Lysander, who bowed ironically. ‘And Juliet’s Nurse – a young woman in this production – will be played by Miss Martita Torrera. As well as directing, I will play Juliet’s confessor, Friar Lawrence, and Romeo’s bosom friend Mercutio will be played by Mr Simon Carver.’ He gestured at Simon, and as he did so an odd, disappointed expression flashed across his face. This man was tall and slender, with pale skin and rather long brown hair flopping about his temples. He had his arms out to hug her, and Martita stepped into the hug – but there was something about her movements that told me she did not really want to be hugged at all.

Aunt Lucy held up her hand. ‘Wait,’ she said. ‘I’ve had a thought. Let me make a few telephone calls.’

Chapter 6

She’s all right,’ said Daisy, wrinkling her nose, her cheeks a little red. ‘I suppose. She’s not bad.’ She plunged her hand into her stomach and doubled over, gasping. She slowly crumpled to the ground, making small whimpering noises, twitched twice and then lay still. Have a look at those,’ said Aunt Lucy, ‘and then begin to go through this exercise book. Solve what you can, and bring your work to me this afternoon.’

Of course, the policeman is here today, and so are we, because of the corpse – which is not a pleasant thing to have to write. Dead bodies are always awful. They are my least favourite part of what Daisy and I do. Daisy is sometimes impatient with me when I say this. But, all the same, I am glad they do upset me. I do not think I would be as good a detective if I stopped caring about the victims. Murder matters, and bothering about it helps us solve each case.Dull!’ said Daisy, pushing them aside to perch on my desk, but I thought them quite marvellous. I lost myself in them for hours, far past the time I would have been brave enough to be seen studying anything at Deepdean, and only stopped when my brain was humming with numbers and symbols and languages. I have been reading your books ever since they first came out! You have inspired me to love reading and be an author when I grow up. I think that the junior pinkertons will be there to help the society and they will have a bit of a romance! I guessed that Daisy cant act for some reason ( probably because she was a victim of an accident/ prank, and Hazel has to take the centre of the stage to help the show go on! she might improvise a bit if she forgets her lines, and judging by the endings in your books, all will be well. maybe you could include an extract of book 8? (cheeky smile) 🙂 Don’t you like her?’ I said, surprised, for I had seen Martita patiently working with Daisy on her graveyard scene, showing her how to project her voice into the depths of the stalls. Death in the Spotlight is the seventh book in the Murder Most Unladylike series. It is written by Robin Stevens. The story takes place in the Rue Theatre.
