Priorities under this theme will facilitate and explore new ways of working, taking more risks and helping artists to have more autonomy to engage with citizens in new and creative ways. To engage with public sector, private sector, cultural sector and citizens in the ongoing development of cultural policiesThe Strategy builds on the heritage and culture of the city and introduces five key goals for cultural growth and seven big ideas for transforming the cultural life of the city. The initial five goalsare: Goal 1: Partnership There is a perception that Dorset is a wealthy, affluent place but 11 areas of Dorset are some of the most deprived areas nationally in terms of indices of multiple deprivation. 6,800 children live in workless households and Weymouth and Portland have some of the poorest levels of social mobility in the UK. A major investor in an extraordinary cluster of diverse cultural organisations with considerable profile, reach and influence in London, the UK and abroad. Our year is designed to create a collective moment for the city. The programme does not have a final destination. If the purpose of this wider strategy is cultural transformation then the legacy of 2023 is that in activating a new sense of place we can find new senses of belonging. A survey of Sherborne businesses evidenced that 60% said they were busier and profit had increased on the weekend of Dorset Moon compared to a normal July weekend and 100% of the businesses said arts festivals were vital for bringing in new visitors from outside of the county to a town.

This strategy is a consolidation of the foundation, commitments and achievements of several preceding strategies and frameworks and commits the city to facilitating a new integrated phase of culture-led progress and development,with the individual at the heart of this process. The Compact will support collective, co-ordinated action to grow and sustain the cultural ecosystem. This will involve aligning activity and funding, and levering additional human, financial and property resources, in support of an agreed local purpose. The Compact will be the primary vehicle for discussion between local partners and with government about how best to deploy culture for the city. Each city’s Compact will have a distinctive purpose, according to need and opportunity.
