The Canon Sure Shot A1 is a point-and-shoot 35mm film camera which first debuted in 1994. It’s a friendly, cute and simple-to-use camera, with a good lens and some interesting features not found in typical point-and-shoots of its era, most obvious of which is its ability to operate underwater to depths as great as 15 feet.

There’s no reason to choose the Canon over any of the other underwater point-and-shoot cameras, but there’s also no reason to choose the others over the Canon. This decision may come down to brand loyalty, an aesthetic tingle, or a fondness or loathing for white plastic. I love my A1. With our unpredictable British weather it gets a lot of use – it’s essentially my go to point and shoot when I don’t want to risk anything else in a downpour. The output is so much better than you would expect for something that looks like it was made by Fisher-Price.The focus on the Canon Sure Shot Supreme is located in the middle of the frame, which means when focusing the camera, part of your subject has to be overlapping the square in the middle of your viewfinder. It also shows you where the edge of your frame will be so that you can line up your shots accurately. Regardless, all of these posts feature shots taken with it. There are a couple of ergonomic design features that are easy to miss when looking at the camera but are revealed when it comes to handling it. Furthermore, it doesn’t have a very good lens either. With an f/4.5 maximum aperture, it’s slow for a start, but it’s also quite soft. I knew this from a bit of low level research I did about it before I started shooting it. I found this short review which talks of a soft lens – this didn’t put me off though, in fact, it just added weight to my ability to forget about trying to achieve “high quality” results, and instead gave me the impetus to just snap. If this was to happen, and it did happen, the cameras would have to be easy to operate. The AF-7 certainly fits this bill. By the mid 1990s, camera technology had improved significantly and it was now possible for to produce zoom lenses for affordable, compact cameras like the Canon Sureshot series.
