About this deal

I'm a big believer in fate, everything happening for a reason (even though I know sometimes we won't find out the "why" while we're here. I find that books land in my lap when I need them the most and often it's to teach me a lesson. Micalea's book taught me lots of lessons. It wasn't a story perfectly wrapped with a pretty red bow. It was real, it was raw, it was life. Her writing style is brilliant, you feel as if you are on a journey with these characters and come to know them as your friends. You will fall and you will fall hard. There were times I laughed out loud, and other times where I sobbed, big fat tears and was so grateful that I was home where no one could see me and my ugly cry outburst. What sealed the nail for me, however, was when the FMC informed the MMC of her suicide attempt and he flipped out on her and blamed her for her depression. He belittled her, called her weak and selfish. He told her she hadn’t tried hard enough, and that he can’t “be with someone like her.” I am so in love with this book, I love it so much more because it's not something Micalea would normally write, definitely out of her comfort zone, but I find the books that authors are most nervous about releasing are the best kind of books... This book for Micalea has been TEN LONG BLOODY YEARS in the making and I'm so grateful and happy that she was finally able to write it and release it.. All things set aside: this book felt like what I needed to hear at this exact moment in my life. It was a good reminder that I'm not alone in this journey, despite what my inner voice might tell me sometimes. The timeline from here wasn't really flowing and hard to follow, having to re read paragraph that she was 20 weeks pregnant but Ben had been gone for 18 weeks. I like books that I don't have to think too much and once again this goes for timeline having inconsistencies.

After having LOVED this author’s past two novels, it pains me that I cannot say I loved this one as well. But I can say some other *stuff*, so here goes... All of that said, I read this in less than 24 hours, which is rare, and a solid testament to this author’s capabilities. True talent, and I look forward to more! The twist that I found amazing was quite unrealistic. There was a lot in this book that wasn’t quite believable and I did have trouble reading it at my usual fast pace. Finn and Ellen are supposed to be in love but you can’t tell from him constantly leaving the house and barely spending time with her. Yes, this is part of the story, but it made me feel disconnected from the characters. There really wasn’t much depth to any of them. I'm never going to get it right, turns out I'm the worst detective - don't call me if you need help solving a mystery stars! Problem is, it's all a bit like a slightly comical (though unintentionally so) B-movie. Every chapter ends with some really cheesy line that is supposed to be ominous. Like: Ellen is horrified when she finds something that would have no meaning to anyone but her, Layla and Finn. Then she thinks she spots Layla in a nearby town and Finn must question everything he knows about the past ten years. While there was suspense...there was also something silly too. Silly sentences sneak into the dialogue..., but I was still a willing reader. The addictive quality was there too.

Then we had the third act conflict that happened at 57% of the book. A conflict caused by the main girl's depression and the ISSUE that the guy had with it because of his mom. I related to Pheonix a lot more than I would have liked to, but life happens & i’m grateful to be here, still living this life while reading many books! Ellen is Layla’s elder sister, the more sensible, more caring of the two and Finn just couldn’t help but fall for her. Even though still deep down his loyalty and love still resides with Layla. I know I'm being vague, but I went into this story knowing NOTHING and you should too. Trust me, you do not want this story spoiled for you. This was the first book I've read by Micalea and it won't be my last. Just an incredible, amazing story. And let's not even talk about the drama and the "plot twist" that happened out of nowhere at 90% of this book. God, can someone be even more pathetic? Like, I get it. Dude’s mother committed suicide as well and he was the one who found her, so I understand his trauma. But this? To tell her—you know what? I’m just going to put up some quotes here because I’m enraged:

B.A. Paris - Author Website

So although there were a few things that bothered me about the story, overall I still enjoyed it. In my opinion, this was another clever psychological suspense novel from B.A Paris, and I am excited to see what she comes up with next. Well done B.A. Paris! If you are a serious thriller fan, this book has everything you crave in a perfectly crafted thriller! James Russo blames himself for being unable to save his mother years ago. Now he’s made it his life’s mission to help everyone he can. So when he catches a glimpse of his beautiful new neighbor crying through her bedroom window, he’s determined to be her refuge.Has Finn’s missing, presumed dead, girlfriend, returned after twelve years when he starts a relationship with her sister. Who is telling the truth about the past? All seem to have something to hide. First it was the dialogue. Imagine you take it out all the clichés that you ever read in a book or saw in a romcom and put them in the middle of a book mixed it up with every single predictable thing that came out of self help book at the beginning of the 00's. That's how the two main characters communicated. What I have noticed about B.A Paris' writing style is something I'm not too fond of. I feel like every character has a "paranoia" style. I'm not even sure how to describe it... It's constantly "what if this" or Omg what if this..." This gets on my nerves... a lot.
