Voited is a brand I’ve only just come across recently. It’s quite a new business set up by Frank Voit, who has been the COO and General Manager at the likes of Billabong, Element, RVCA, Von Zipper and Neil Pryde Waterwear. Their outlook on creating products is all about being as practical as possible whilst finding ways to reduce the impact of manufacturing on the environment, with sustainable sourcing and production. The outside shell of this recycled changing robe is made of two-layer DWR recycled Nylon, and the inside is made of 100% recycled fleece. Mainland Europe. Are changing robes worth it?

SUSTAINABILITY: Cape Cove have strong eco-credentials across their range – and the Cape has an outer fabric of 86% and inner fabric of 54% recycled polyester, all GRS certified. With their pending B Corp certification, slow fashion ethic and free repairs pledge, they’re a strong new addition to the changing robe market. Voited have taken a slightly different approach to their changing robes, compared to Gorilla, Vivida and Dryrobe. Instead of the synthetic woolly fleece inner lining, Voited have opted to use different materials depending on its placement and use. While this will protect you from the wind and rain while you are changing, it will not be as warm as the Red Paddle Co or Northcore robes, so it should probably be used only in summer or during light weather. What are Waterproof Changing Robes? A blustery November day by the river at Farleigh Hungerford swimming club saw Kate Rew, Rosie Nottage and Arron Collins-Thomas test a selection of eco-friendly robes. We selected robes which are readily available in the UK, have solid environmentally friendly credentials and were sent in to our testers. We included our own Red, Fourth Element and dryrobes which showed how older products perform. Heavy duty with taped seams, it was fully waterproof even in the heaviest downpours and seemed to offer a halfway house between a waterproof coat and a swim robe, looking less ‘obvious’ and being slightly more fitted, though our size medium (5ft7in female tester) still had plenty of room to change.

The number of eco-friendly robes on the market has increased in the last few years, and swimmers now have a good choice of weatherproof changing robes made from recycled materials with eco-friendly finishes.
SUSTAINABILITY: Charlie McLeod scores very highly on the eco-credentials. With an outer made of 100% recycled and inner 95% recycled PET plastic (GRS certified) – approximately 110 recycled plastic bottles go into every cloak. Vivida is relatively new to the watersports changing robe scene but has seen huge success with their poncho towel robes over the years, so they know what they’re doing!At dryrobe we’re very proud to work with a team of incredible ambassadors and individuals across a huge range of sports. Northcore’s Beach Basha robe is another Dryrobe alternative that's worth a look. It’s got a PU-coated nylon outer and a soft fleece lining, but the standout feature is the hood. One of the features that set their robes apart is the matching side zippers, which can be found on their leading waterproof long sleeve robes. Their prices are very affordable, and for eco-conscious shoppers, they have changing towels made of 100% recycled polyester materials. Each eco waterproof changing robe comes in it's own waterproof scrap bag. These are made out of the remnants from your smoc. You can stand on these to get changed. Red’s Pro Evo robe caught our eye with its smart contrast-trim colourways, but it also comes with some clever technical features.
