Away with the Penguins, a review by Joanna Away with the Penguins, a review by Joanna

The next book to be featured on the Jo Whiley Radio 2 Book Club will be Away with the Penguins, the wonderfully uplifting novel by Hazel Prior. Hazel will be on the show on Monday 6 April and the book was released on 12 March. Veronica doesn’t have family or friends nearby. Not that she knows about, anyway… And she has no idea where she’s going to leave her considerable wealth when she dies. Magellanic penguins are curious little critters. As we made our way around the nests, they were as interested in looking at us as we were at them. Their little heads tilted to the left and to the right as they peered at us with first one eye and then the other. It was cute to watch, especially when the babies joined the dance.

Recommended Reading: Away with the Penguins

The genius of this approach is that for all the redemptive elements to the story, Away With the Penguins never feels like some confected tale of change and growth that sounds like it could never happen in the real world. I want to express my sincere thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada for this wonderful, heartfelt ARC. This delightful gem of a book will take its place high on my favourite list. This is my second reading of this enjoyable book which also has an alternate title, Away With the Penguins. The author writes with compassion and insight into the human heart, especially its good and kind parts in human nature that are redeemable. I loved the characters and its setting. There were sections that made me cry, parts where I was laughing out loud. I found it pleasurable and also thought-provoking. And once she sets her mind on something, well...let's just say there's nothing on this earth powerful enough to stop her. It's been a very long time since I've had an adventure.Oh my gosh. This one was so much fun. The characters in the story are well-developed, and the plot flows seamlessly. The story highlights strong independent women as role models, while the antagonists are primarily portrayed as white males or individuals guided by religious dogmas. Veronica teaches scientists about the importance of love, family, and bonding. Yes, she becomes their savior. It was a little far-fetched to me. Now most people would simply see their solicitor, make the necessary arrangements and leave it at that; but then, Veronica McCreedy is not most people.

Penguins: The new heartwarming story from the No Call of the Penguins: The new heartwarming story from the No

We continued our walk towards a stairway, which brought us up a hill and we were informed by our guide that we should not stop while passing through the nesting area. We were allowed to take videos and photographs while walking but we weren’t to stop. I soon found out why. Veronica McCreedy is a fussy, unfriendly, skeptical 85-year-old woman, living in her huge house in Scotland. She likes to be left alone, is sure that her memory is perfect (it’s not), and is, in general, fed up with the world, her housekeeper Eileen, and the hand life has dealt her. Being alone is supposed to be an issue for people such as me, but I have to say I find it deeply satisfying.Veronica McCreedy is rich, old and to be honest, she's expecting to die (somewhat) soon. Veronica McCreedy, at age 85, spends her days mostly alone, in her mansion in Scotland by the sea. She has no family. No friends. The only human interaction Veronica has in her life is with her personal assistant, Eileen, and a gardener who tends to the grounds of her mansion. She is the quintessential lonely, grumpy curmudgeon. Her life is a very well-worn one that brooks no change and which seems destined to keep shuffling along without much to distinguish it until the day Veronica shuffles off this mortal coil. In my opinion, the last part felt harsh, if Veronica wanted to help the penguins, she should make sure they get support no matter what. But today…today Veronica is going to make a decision that will change all of this. Selection panel review The BBC Radio 2 Book Club announced on 24 January that its new home is on the Zoe Ball Breakfast Show.

However, as her story unfolds, we gain new insights into her life and understand why she keeps people at arm's length, fearing the possibility of losing them again. She also finds most human company irksome, and deplores stupid questions so she pretends to be hard of hearing when it’s suits her. This is my second Hazel Prior book and I really enjoy her quirky character driven stories. Veronica is in her seventies, living on her own, and has lived a life marked by stark loneliness and tragedy. She has no one left. No family. Except… she discovers, she does. A long lost grandson she never knew about is discovered, and the book delves into his life, into her past coming of age during WW2, and a mission to Antarctica to be with the penguins (which was my favorite part of the book—penguins, so adorable.) What are your thoughts about Veronica when you first meet her, and how does your opinion change throughout the story? But Abbie was too troubled to see clearly. Too damaged to see the dangers Tony Sharpe brought into her life.

When John and I were married in December 2021, we had a pair of very small, hand-carved, wooden penguins on our wedding cake – a nod to what should have been our Antarctic honeymoon in January 2022. Penguins have meant a lot to us since we got engaged and it was always our intention to include them in some small way on our wedding day. She's a grumpy individual; she's self-absorbed, and oh my goodness, she's controlling. She has always exhibited these traits throughout her life. Now, at the age of 85, soon to turn 86 on the 21st of June, she has a mission to accomplish: to donate her considerable wealth to penguin research and locate her unknown and estranged grandson. The characters in the story are well-developed, and the plot flows seamlessly. The story highlights strong independent women as role models, while the antagonists are primarily portrayed as white males or individua Thankfully, Prior never allows the book to descend into treacle-y, twee inspirationalism, and while there are copious moments of human warmth and wonder that make reading Away With the Penguins a total joy, Veronica McCreedy is allowed to retain enough rough edges to make her feel like a real, authentic human being. One of those quirky delightful light readers where its easy to get so invested with the main characters.
