About this deal

Along the rugged coastlines, small villages, windswept moors, and golden sandy beaches, she was joined by thousands of runners and learned the power of community. I’ve also loved There are Other Rivers which is in a different style than the above books. This one tells the story of when Alastair Humphreys walked across India following the course of a holy river. He walked alone and spent nights under the stars or in the homes of strangers. India is a fascinating country and this book gives you a very interesting insight into the people that live there and the nature that surrounds them. If you’ve ever felt like you’re the only one in your group of friends who is not buying a house, married or pregnant, then this book’s for you. Hannahspecialises in active travel and on That Adventurer you’ll find hiking, walking, biking, skiing and all sorts of active travel guides to allow you to see a destination in an adventurous way.

Always upbeat and often insightful, Bedtime Adventure Stories is the antidote to adult life. It’ll have you drifting off into the land of nod, dreaming up journeys of your very own – and it’s proof that the only thing standing between you and the next wild adventure is a willingness to step beyond your front door. Furthermore, McNuff, an ambassador for UK Girl Guiding, plotted her route to reach as many Guide (girl guides) units as possible, arriving in the evenings to give motivational talks and show them her disgusting feet. ‘I wanted to bring it to life for them, show them that I’m a real human being and I’m really doing it, and it’s hard and it’s awesome and all those things,’ she says. Anna’s 2nd book tells the story of the time she decided to cycle 11,000 miles through each state of the USA after becoming disillusioned with corporate life. Anna is a breath of fresh air and an inspiration to women and girls everywhere. An honest description of an impressive feat (feet) beautifully written and engagingly told.girls answered this survey about what they wanted to be in the future,” explains Anna. “The core things that came out were things like – they wanted to be planet protectors, they wanted to be change makers, and they want to be adventurers. Anna makes her way across a beach in northern Scotland. Photo: Barefoot Britain Anna McNuff had never run a mile without shoes on before. And yet, one British summer, she set off to run a (very) wiggly route from the Shetland Islands to London - on a mission to cover the distance of 100 marathons... in bare feet. I wanted to do a run where I felt that level of terrified and excited and the thought popped into my head – ‘why don’t you do it in your bare feet’? Straight away another little voice said ‘that’s mad!’ And I thought, hang on – if I think it’s mad then maybe it’s a good idea?” Starting on the Right Foot There were many mishaps and disasters along the way, but helping to keep me going through the tough times was a mission to deliver motivational talks to over 1,700 young women. I was also was joined by over 2,500 local runners during 148 days on the road and somehow the kind British public passed my kit bag along like a giant baton while I ran. I have enjoyed all of Anna's books but this one holds a special place for me as I was one of those 2500 runners who joined her for a stage on her journey running barefoot Britain.

Barefoot Britain (Paperback): A Running - McNuff Books

Choose the wiggliest, most mountainous route possible,” advises Anna McNuff in “Llama Drama”, a compelling outdoor adventure book that chronicles Anna and her friend Faye’s six-month journey along the Andes. I started with A Walk in the Woods (probably my favourite) and also polished off Notes From a Big Country, The Lost Continent and The Life and Times of The Thunderbolt Kid.One of the best-kept secrets in Greece is its brown bear population! We speak to Callisto, a conservation NGO working in the Pindos Mountains, about the fascinating brown bears in Greece I think now I’ve been through so many cycles of ups and downs now that I’m starting to roll with it a bit more. Being able to talk about tough days openly is not something that comes naturally to people. And often before I post something where I’m crying in a video I’ll have this barrier which wants me not to do it. It’s showing vulnerability. But then I realise that’s the only way you’re going to help people. Everybody feels like that. And I want to show people that I feel all the same things that they do. As of 2023, That Adventurer is a proud member of 1% for the planet and we donate at least 1% of all the money we make from this blog. This money goes directly to non-profits who help make the world a better place and protect it for future generations. A fiction book but a great adventure nonetheless this book set in Alaksa, will have you mesmerised by both the beauty and the harshness of an Alaskan winter. As a proud ambassador for Girlguiding, I wanted to visit as many Girlguiding units during my run as I could. I spoke to girls of all ages about the joys of adventure to encourage them to have the confidence to seek out new challenges, even when it might seem scary at first. I know that if these girls can take those first adventurous steps, then they will find the space to grow, and soon see what they’re truly capable of. I want to inspire the girls of the UK to be their brilliant selves.

McNuff is an established motivational and keynote speaker. Her talks focus on the topics of resilience, growth mindset, dealing with change and overcoming a fear of failure. Her TEDx talk, ‘But what if I Fail?’ is a popular example of her talk. When we were travelling across the US in our van I read a lot of books by Bill Bryson. I’d read The Road to Little Dribblingwhen it first came out and loved it. If you want a humorous look into the UK from the eyes of a foreigner read it for sure! Whilst in the US I thought I’d read some of the books by Bryson based in the States. The second, Thunder and Sunshine, covers the rest of the trip and is just as enjoyable (if not more so) than the first.

She said: “Adventures are about a quest for growth. I figure that if I’m going to stand in front of young girls around the UK and encourage them take on challenges that they believe to be just beyond their reach – then I have to be on that journey too.” Alastair Humphreys has a style of writing that I love. It’s funny, entertaining and will probably make you cry at points too. You really feel like you’re living the highs and the lows that come with his adventures. Like this article? Have you ever wanted to kayak down a gorge in New Zealand? Or run night-time marathons through the Californian desert? How about rollerblading 100 miles around Amsterdam? Adult non-fiction books: McNuff's debut book about running the length of New Zealand called ‘The Pants of Perspective’ was published on in July 2017. She has since gone on to write a book about her journey by bike through America called ’50 Shades of the USA’ (published Sept 2017). Her third book about South America, ‘Llama Drama’ was published in July 2020. After three years in East Africa, and newly engaged, Trina returned to Peace River with a plan to sponsor her fiance, Akello’s, immigration to Canada. Despite her fear of being alone in the woods, she applied for a seasonal lookout position and got the job. Children’s Books: McNuff's first children's book called ‘100 Adventures to Have Before You Grow Up’ was published by Walker Books UK and released on April 2, 2020.It’s not an easy swim and one that she’d attempted before and failed due to very near death by jellyfish and poor weather. But, on September 2, 2013, at the age of sixty-four, Nyad emerged onto the sands of Key West after swimming 111 miles in fifty-three hours. While I’ve yet to read it, My Midsummer Morning, where Alastair recreated the journey of Laurie Lee mentioned above, is sure to be another great read. One I’m adding to my list while we’re at home! Final thoughts on the best outdoor books
