About this deal

I recently gave a Kindle to my daughter, she was never one to read…..now she is an avid reader and reading Steve C and racing through books, but like me she now finds it difficult to ‘get into’ other writers. More please Steve. Of course the Irish have a history of great writers.

I don’t know what else to tell you about the plot so I’m not even going to try. I love a twisty, convoluted thriller but this may have had one or two twists too many. Most of the time I didn’t have a clue what was going on or which way was up! Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed reading this but I do think it was too much. The biggest problem though, is that ‘Twisted’ really feels built around the turns in its plot. The characters and events are just there to carry you from one twist to another. As a result, I found myself not caring at all about what happened to the people I was reading about. That is the kiss of death for any book, no matter how good the twists are. regardless, the writing is good, the characters are interesting, and the plot is well developed - so i cant find any faults there. i just wish i had enjoyed the content more. Twisted by Steve Cavanagh is his first standalone novel; this one isn’t about a lawyer but a writer. I trust it isn’t too closely modelled on his day-to-day existence.

About reading his first thriller book, he says, “That changed everything and I read Red Dragon straight after and fell in love with crime and thriller novels. I also always had an interest in the law, so I read John Mortimer’s Rumpole of the Bailey series and, of course, John Grisham.” I loved the way the book showed you the dull parts of police work without actually feeling boring. The addition of those scenes made the book realistic enough to make sense but deliberate enough to capture your interest. Maria asked for cream and sugar, and it came a lot later than it should have. No tip for Sandy, thought Maria.

Another reason for the US setting was that Steve loves writing fast-paced legal thrillers. The British way is much slower, so the books can’t take place there, especially since there is the dual system of representation (solicitor and barristers) which doesn’t exist in the US, which would have needed the addition of a second main character that the author didn’t want to introduce into the story. Twisted is no doubt a brilliant thriller that will grab your attention and make you on a journey you won’t forget. I was a huge fan of Thirteen but for me this book just wasn’t as good in my opinion; the characters weren’t as well developed and I have to say the plot didn’t have the same impact. However, it is still a great thriller with an innovative plot that will give you goosebumps. In addition to being a civil-rights lawyer and writing books, Steve Cavanagh is also the host of the Two Crime Writers and a Microphone podcast with Luca Veste. In this online show, they interview writers, agents, editors, publishers, as well as bring the latest in the book world. Although the interviews are not standard, as the discussions can go pretty much anywhere the thread takes them. So it’s more like a discussion than anything else. The book started strong BUT the plot lost steam about halfway, and started to drag, dumping information to try and explain the complicated TWIST. All across the USA, people are showing up dead. The deaths don't appear to be connected in any way until one particular death occurs and gets the Secretary of Defense's attention. He arranges for a task force to investigate.Among all of the murder and mayhem there is a serious question raised in Twisted. And that is: how much do you need to know about crime or personally experience to write a good crime novel? Could it be possible that the most atmospheric and realistic books about serial killers can only be written by serial killers? Or does it take some other form of slightly off kilter personality? If you love a story with a good twist and come on, who doesn’t? They do not come any better than this. What does the blurb say? The book is aptly named “Twisted” because just when you think you have a grasp on what is going on and you believe you know who J.T. Lebeau is, the rug is pulled from underneath you and you are spun around in circles. I lost count of how many times I thought I had worked it out and could see where the end was going only to find out that everything had changed and was upside down. A fantastic standalone thriller. Punchy, ridiculously gripping, fast-paced, clever. Beautifully-plotted and incredibly fun to read. He’s done it again. SUPERB.’ Will Dean

There are three main characters, again I’m not saying too much, but none of them come out of this book covered in glory and I have to say I didn’t warm to any of them. Just how is an attempted murder, a lover, a famous writer and a missing husband connected? and the big question is ‘who is J.T LeBeau’, and do you really want to know the answer to the question? One of my very favourite authors, but even by his high standards this is an extraordinary book. Absolutely recommended.' M. W. CRAVEN Steve Cavanagh επιστρέφει με ένα ακόμα θρίλερ που ευελπιστεί να καθηλώσει με τον ίδιο τρόπο τους αναγνώστες.

Later on, while living in Cardiff, he followed with a postgraduate diploma in legal practice at Cardiff University, while also working on writing comedy screenplays for three years, between the age of 18 and 21. As the screenplays never sold or became a success, Steve returned to Belfast where he began working with a reputable law firm as an investigator. His cases ranged from traffic accidents, work-related accidents, to severe incidents involving injuries. One POSITIVE however is that we are introduced to a young deputy Melissa Bloch, and we learned about the case that motivated her to move into Private Investigation work, eventually leading her to a job with Eddie Flynn- With The Defense, the first book by the author, Steve Cavanagh showed the world that to win a case, the truth is not always necessary. All you need is to prove something, whether it’s true or not. In the author’s own words, “whoever tells the best story usually wins.” It is certainly one of those thrillers that the less you know of the story before you read it, the more exciting the ride! If you are a fan of Steve Cavanagh’s previous work with his four Eddie Flynn novels, don’t be disappointed as this is a standalone novel but the good old lawyer does get a cheeky mention which is a lovely nod to his previous work. SC is the king of courtroom dramas - his eddie flynn series is some of the best crime novels i have ever read. so i was super excited to see what kind of standalone he could create.

It is pretty freaky to open a new book and see your name on the very first line! That is what happened with Kill For Me Kill For You. Amanda White is one of the main characters, and everytime I saw my name I did a double take. I am a big fan of Steve Cavanagh's books and I loved this stand alone novel so much. No Eddie Flynn in sight, but a twisty and thrilling "Strangers on a Train" story. A superb thriller: wonderful characters, a smart, compelling and moving story, beautifully written, and full of twists I never saw coming' ALEX NORTH I stumbled upon the work of Steve Cavanagh early this year and have not been able to get enough. While Eddie Flynn is a wonderful protagonist, I enjoyed this standalone that permitted me to see a new and exciting side to this thrill writer. Cavanagh creates a wonderful story with a handful of basic characters, turning a simple reveal into a masterful game of cat and mouse. With a story in which the reader knows all and watches things play out, Cavanagh develops his narrative and takes it in many needed tangents before returning things for the final reveal. Cavanagh uses his strong characters and dialogue to pull the reader in, mixing short and longer chapters to create sustained interest. Once caught in the trap, all the reader can do is ‘read a little more’ to get their fix. I’m now a firm believer that Steve Cavanagh is one of those versatile authors who can turn any plot into a masterful novel. If only I did not have to wait so long for more! This way, he managed to finish his first draft within a year. He sent it to several publishing houses but got over 30 rejections.

And just when this reader thought he had the plot worked out, a killer final twist left me reeling. Twisted is the perfect summer holiday read from one of the UK's best thriller writers. * Daily Express *
