About this deal

Like The Last Bear, The Lost Whale is illustrated by Levi Penfold. What do you think of his illustrations - any stand-out moments? The most spellbinding read. I raced through this book, completely engrossed in Rio and his quest to find White Beak. My book of the year so far' Nizrana Farook, author of The Girl Who Stole an Elephant

As Rio grows to love the whales, he discovers that his mother loved them, too. He's suddenly sure that if he can somehow find a way to connect her with these gentle giants - and especially with a particular whale named White Beak - she will get better and come to join him in California. But White Beak is missing--and Rio must embark on a desperate journey across the dangerous ocean to find her. It isn't only a environmental conscious narrative, but with its cadence to deal with hard topics in family dynamics - such as how parent's mental health affects the child deeply -, I can tell you Hannah Gold has written something quite unique and relatable to all of us. A beautiful story . . . My heart went out to Bear and April and the lost environments of the north. This is a hugely important and moving read, that shows just what toll climate change is taking on the natural world' Lauren James, author of The Quiet at the End of the WorldAfter being handed his mothers sketch book and being invited on a whale spotting tour, he meets White Beak for the first time and an instant connect starts. We ignore the rest of our senses, underestimate their power, not only disconnecting us from one another, but also disconnecting us from the world around us, dismissing what we cannot comprehend or recognize as empathy.

I'm not one of those authors who approaches research from a particularly scientific point of view, but what I do like to do is immerse myself in the setting of the book. So, for The Last Bear, that meant reading lots about Bear Island, watching documentaries on the Arctic and traveling to Norway to experience the midnight sun first-hand. Both a hug and a battle cry with the most beautiful friendship at its heart. April and Bear's bond changes them both forever. And it might just change you too' Aisling Fowler, author of Fireborn Muchas veces me he encontrado con libros de literatura infantil o juvenil con tanta calidad que nada tienen que envidiar a los de adultos. It’s often a teary book, with tissues needed, but it also teaches the reader a bit about mental health issues but a lot about Whales and need to step up and take responsibility for their plight.

Big thank you to Books Are My Bag for sending me this as part of the Children’s Fiction Shortlist for the Indie Book Awards!* Night Mayor Franklefink has vanished from the Transylvanian Express - and it's up to you to solve the case! Part of the Solve Your Own Mystery seri... We all care for the environment and are scared of the daunting prospect of actually doing so. However, if Rio and White Beak can teach us anything is that an open heart and a small action, added to others' numerous small actions, can save lives and, ultimately, the oceans and all living beings that call it home.
