About this deal

I’ve heard it once called Star Trek: The Motionless Picture by Eugene Roddenberry out of all people. The rest of stuff you list I’m fine with…well…except for those sparkles. They are extremely amateurish looking.

The focus should be in matching the other models stylistically to the best that the Enterprise can look with this “remastering” and ensure that all the live action meets that look halfway. The rest of the fretting can’t do anything but ruin the entire transfer… The creation of V'Ger caused problems for the entire production. The crew was dissatisfied with the original four-foot clay model created by the Abel group, which looked like a modernized Nemo's Nautilus submarine. Industrial designer Syd Mead was hired to visualize a new version of the mammoth craft. Mead created a machine that contained organic elements based on input from Wise, Roddenberry, and the effects leads. The final model was 68 feet (21m) long, built from the rear forward so that the camera crews could shoot footage while the next sections were still being fabricated. The model was built out of a plethora of materials—wood, foam, macramé, Styrofoam cups, incandescent, neon and strobe lights. [30] :63–4Mediascene Interview Ralph McQuarrie". Mediascene. Not only was this the first TV showing of the movie, but it also introduced a different cut of the film that came to be known as the “Special Longer Version.” Running for two hours and 24 minutes (without commercials), as opposed to the theatrical cut’s two hours and 12 minutes, the “SLV” essentially incorporated a number of scenes that were left unfinished and kept out of the picture by director Robert Wise in 1979 – who apparently did not approve of this version. Many critics felt that the special effects overshadowed other elements of the film. Canby wrote that the film "owes more to [Trumbull, Dykstra and Michelson] than it does to the director, the writers or even the producer". [108] Livingston felt that Trumbull and Dykstra's work on the film was not as impressive as on Star Wars and Close Encounters due to the limited amount of production time. [102] Godfrey called the effects "stunning", but conceded that they threatened to overpower the story two-thirds of the way into the film. [106] Kroll, Martin, and Arnold agreed that the effects were not able to carry the film or gloss over its other deficiencies: "I'm not sure that Trumbull & Co. have succeeded in pulling the philosophic chestnuts of Roddenberry and his co-writers out of the fire", Arnold wrote. Earlier this year, Paramount+ premiered a 4K Ultra HD (high definition) version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture – The Director’s Edition. Prepared over the course of six months by Fein, Matessino, and a visual effects team with access to Paramount’s archives, this iteration of ST: TMP stayed true to the vision established by Wise for The Director’s Edition in 2001, while doing a further, extensive, HD restoration and upgrade of the entire film. I’ve found it to be one of the worst HD transfers in a long time – and Paramount is the King of half-a**ed DVD transfers. Clearly this was all about Mr. Wise’s directors cut and completing scenes to make that possible. No attention AT ALL is paid to Mr. Wise’s intent/wishes as a Director supervising a Director’s Edition of an HD transfer.Bob Peak (July 1, 2002). "Movie Poster Art Star Trek: The Motion Picture". Hopefully they will fix this for the physical media release. I’m sorry but for something that’s been talked up as the “definitive” version that they worked on for so long, there are still far, far too many errors and bad decisions in this thing. I went over them in detail on the original post following release, but let’s recap:

We don’t say that frivolously. Star Trek: The Motion Picture is one of Hollywood’s most famous “unfinished” films. Rushing to meet a December 7, 1979 release date, with many of the visual effects being completed right up until the last possible minute by Douglas Trumbull (who had replaced the previous VFX supervisor), director Robert Wise ( The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Sound of Music) pretty much just stopped working on the film, carrying the first available print on a plane to the movie’s Washington D.C. premiere. The score for Star Trek: The Motion Picture was predominantly written by Jerry Goldsmith, beginning a long association with scoring Star Trek film and television. [38] [39] Gene Roddenberry had originally wanted Goldsmith to score Star Trek's pilot episode, " The Cage", but he was unavailable. [40] When Wise signed on to direct, Paramount asked if he had any objection to using Goldsmith. Wise, who had worked with Goldsmith on The Sand Pebbles, replied "Hell, no. He's great!" Wise later considered his work with Goldsmith one of the best relationships he ever had with a composer. [41] Paramount has released a portion of the deleted scene where Kirk prepares to broadcast a message down to engineering in the hopes that it will sway the Ilia probe. a b c d Goldsmith, Jerry. Star Trek: The Motion Picturecomes to UK 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray courtesy of Paramount in a box set that includes the first four movies in the original film series. This Ultra HD Blu-rayrelease delivers a frequently gorgeous native 4K image replete with Dolby Vision and, whilst not without its inherent source limitations, it's largely the best it has ever looked in the last forty years. It’s hardly a “rough cut of the whole thing.” They filmed some of the crazy trench stuff and then scrapped it all. Whatever survives of it has been included as a bonus feature since the 2001 DE release. That space station looks amazing and now veeery realistic like it could REALLY happen in a not so distant future! It matches the look of the NASA-designed, proposed IXS-Enterprise (just google it)! The transporter had originally been developed for the television series as a matter of convenience; it would have been prohibitively expensive to show the Enterprise land on every new planet. For the redesign Michelson felt that the transporter should look and feel more powerful. [19] :164–7 He added a sealed control room that would protect operators from the powerful forces at work. The space between the transporter platform and the operators was filled with complex machinery, and cinematographer Richard Kline added eerie lighting for atmosphere. Staring at still frames of a motion picture isn’t exactly how a film is intended to be watched, so take these as general demonstration of the changes. The Ultra HD Blu-ray set
