About this deal

The letters were sent to coincide with the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. This year’s theme ‘dignity for all in practice’ touches heavily on the inequalities lower income people face in access to housing, food, and healthcare. The day aims to recognise the countless people suffering from poverty and highlight the essential global solidarity and shared responsibility we hold to eradicate poverty and combat all forms of discrimination.

The ‘non-market’ sector (including health care and social services, education and training, and public administration and safety) accounts for 27% of employment in Australia (p. 192) Under our refreshed Pacific policy we are adopting a set of five principles to chart our diplomatic interactions. The New Zealand Cabinet has agreed to these principles to steer our Pacific diplomacy. These dials can change in intensity at different times in your life, reflecting that life shifts, for instance, your children don’t need you as much as they grow older, you may take on caring responsibilities for older relatives, you have to focus on work to get a promotion and so forth. The levels change as your life evolves and the levels allow you to be more deliberate and intentional about this. That means you can make trade offs. Perhaps you need to work longer hours to get to the next level at work at one point, but at another something challenging happens in your family that requires you to be less focused on your work. Perhaps there are times when you need to be more focused on your career and your partner can dial their work intensity down. This tragic incident further emphasises how at the Pacific’s very worst moments, when they happen, it’s the neighbours - Australia and New Zealand – who are always there to help. This reset expresses the trajectory of New Zealand’s history, its independent foreign policy, and it is shaped by our close relations in the Pacific region. A new mother enlisted other women to persuade her company to implement a flexible time policy for everyone. New Zealand also has some work to do with its overseas development assistance as our credibility as a humanitarian donor is becoming stretched. And no foreign minister wants to admit that. This prompted senior commission staff to conduct a review of the entire report, which discovered and corrected the errors and unsafe assumptions. Whilst these countries might be small, and disparate and isolated, in reality they occupy a serious part of the world’s space, and it becoming more important every day.A Productivity Commission spokeswoman said the report was changed in July last year after concerns about some of the numbers in it were raised within the organisation. The dial is an elevated goal, one that gets given many names; vision, purpose, mission, objective etc. the difference here is that ultimately whatever we do, it should make the human condition or expereince truly better. How can we make somthing that really matters? And defining something in human terms also has the benefit of demystifying it, and as the understanding is cultivated to democratise what this really means for the organisation and each individual, everyone can get on with the process of delivering.

Use diverse role models and best practice examples to change the perception of the sector and support an increase in representation across all areas of diversity. Our reaction to these events required no reservation at all, it was a natural reaction in their hour of need. It is also a simple reflection of our shared geography. It is not a matter of the country cousin or the senior soldier any more. We are in a serious struggle to get on top of the problem we have in the Pacific and we need best efforts from both of our countries. Drive impact across the industry through facilitating collaboration with key partners, peers and SMEs to support sector-wide EDI progress. In navigating a more complex strategic environment, New Zealand’s view is that we must be respectful of Pacific Island countries’ and clear wish to manage their own international relations while at the same time retain New Zealand’s traditional emphasis on human rights, the rule of law, transparency, good governance and the promotion of democracy. Yet, it is also a region of opportunity and empowerment where Pacific countries want to stand on their own two feet as equals, make their own choices, and have their distinctive voices heard on the global stage.

For a nation that prides itself on being a responsible international citizen, that is simply not good enough. Young men saw numerous positive changes in themselves as a result of attending Shifting the Dial activities, including: a greater sense of purpose and drive to pursue their goals, more self-belief and confidence, and trusting relationships with peers and relatable role models. Participating in Lightpost Theatre Company and Dear Youngers were seen as pre-emptive steps to prevent their mental health getting worse, through belonging, self-expression and providing a remedy to stress. The commission, which acts as an in-house thinktank to the federal government, is required to conduct an inquiry into productivity in Australia every five years, but the Shifting the Dial report was far more comprehensive than the body’s normal review of microeconomic reform.
