About this deal

The Sony CMT-X3CD is quite different to most FM radio CD players. It has a stylish design and features Bluetooth, so you can use it as a wireless speaker. We are always impartial in our testing and ensure we hear every CD player at its optimum – connected to the appropriate kit and placed on a sturdy and level surface. We'll use them in their best use case with different partnering amplifiers and speakers, as well as play plenty of discs in different genres of music through them. Naturally, we give them plenty of listening time (and time to run in) too. You can see some more of the best radios with a USB port here. Ability to play CDs you’ve burnt yourself By far, this is one of the most attractive radios that we’ve seen from Pure to date. While options like the Pure Avalon are sleek and modern, the Evoke brings a touch of retro elegance into its aesthetic appeal. Clearly, we’re getting an updated version of some of the traditional tuner radios that you used to see in homes throughout the 70s and 80s. This is a very well-made radio with a lot of functionality (though it doesn’t have Bluetooth). It’s a great choice if you want something portable and affordable.

If the innovative design of the Pure Chronos CD isn’t enough to convince you that you should try it out yet – then the features just might sway you. Like many of the products in the Pure portfolio, the Chronos doesn’t rest on its laurels. You don’t just get DAB/DAB+ and FM radio combined with a CD player with this device. You’ll also have access to features like an auto-dimming display for nighttime listening, a mobile charging USB device, and a stereo sound system with customisation options available. We’d suggest upping your budget if that is the case, or if you don’t absolutely need a one-box solution, trump both with an all-in-one system such as Denon’s Award-winning D-M40DAB. As a bedside radio, the Pure Chronos Series 2 comes with four radio alarms, which you can set to weekends only, weekdays only, or as one-off alerts. Just keep in mind that you might have to navigate your way through some pretty complex instructions to figure out how to do everything with this device. Still, once you’ve gotten used to the Pure Chronos CD, you’ll be able to use it to access high-detail sound, plenty of stations, and even on-demand profile information. Pure Chronos CD Series II review: Performance

The Ruark R7 is a premium stereo system with numerous inputs, both analog and digital. This is a versatile digital radio with a CD player, an aptX high definition Bluetooth receiver, and a DAB/DAB +/ FM tuner. But these specs alone don’t do it justice, you simply have to hear it to believe. If all you're after is a CD player, then you might want to choose something more dedicated in this list that puts all its eggs in that audio basket. But if versatility is required and you want to stream your music services over wi-fi as well as spin discs - and why not - then this Technics is worth your attention.

We have state-of-the-art testing facilities in London, Reading and Bath, where our team of experienced, in-house reviewers test the majority of hi-fi and AV kit that passes through our door – including CD players. Most tablets and laptops also have Bluetooth, so you can stream audio from these devices through a Bluetooth radio. Pairing the two devices is usually very easy, so Bluetooth can be a convenient feature to have. Still, it’s worth noting that the Pure Chronos 2 was probably intended for use on your bedside table, rather than on an office desk. There are a number of features built-in that make it a perfect bedside companion, including the in-built USB charging port for your phone, and an intelligent light sensor. The sensor automatically adjusts your display brightness, so you aren’t distracted by the device during the night. What does all that mean? It makes your music sound great. It's full of rhythm and drive. It's precise, clean and delivers for dynamics at every inch of the spectrum. Stereo imaging is focused and expansive, and there are even a few digital filters to tweak the sound to your tastes. DAB, which stands for “digital audio broadcasting” is a more modern method of transmitting radio than FM.This Marantz model has been around in various guises for a long time, and remains the best option at this price. For a sleek and minimal home stereo system, opt for this Panasonic model. More than a basic CD player, this also delivers DAB radio stations, audio files via USB, and streaming music over Bluetooth and Chromecast Audio. It benefits from its forward presentation mainly, however, because spaciously it is cramped. Sections with thinner arrangements – the more fragile Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks, for example – aren’t so much affected, but as textures become busier, such as in Terrible Love or Bloodbuzz Ohio, space between instruments is compressed to become close to claustrophobic.

Beyond pale in the face of PMPs loaded up with lossless music files. Both the size of the discman and the need for carrying around CDs is just too impractical. Besides, some of these players sound brilliant - https://www.whathifi.com/best-buys/portable/best-portable-music-players Those who already own an amplifier and have more to spend should consider the Technics SL-G7000M2 as well.Built-in Bluetooth lets you choose your favourite music, streaming service or internet radio station and play it direct from your phone or tablet without trailing wires. However, if you want something very cheap and don’t plan to use it for more than a few years, an FM-only radio should be fine for listening to the big national and local radio stations. Portable or mains-only? What should you consider before purchasing a CD player? It's worth taking into account factors like DAC functionality, ease of use, controls and of course audio performance when making your choice. Performance-wise, we found the Pure Chronos relatively easy to use. If you’re new to the world of DAB radio, then you might have a slightly harder time figuring out how everything works. That tends to be the case with systems that include a lot of extra features, like the Pure Chronos 2. Owners of the CD6006UK needn't rush to change their player but the CD6007 is most definitely the right choice for first time buyers at this end of the market.
