Outdoor PoE extender is an economic and convenient solution to extend PoE cable for deploying IP cameras over 100 meters. PoE technology is based on the rules and standards of Ethernet networking and therefore is subject to the same limitations. Generally, the maximum length of an Ethernet cable per ANSI/TIA-568 cannot exceed 328 feet, or 100 meters. The rule of thumb is one extender to one camera and one NVR. If you are setting up an IP surveillance camera greater than 100m from your network without an extender you will lose signal integrity. Why? Because CAT5e and CAT6 cables would not be able to handle wattage load as the twisted cables are usually the standard 22 gauge.

First, the delivery of data and power over a standard Ethernet cable eliminates the need for AC/DC power supplies and outlets to give power to PD equipment. That lowers the costs of adding or installing compatible PD equipment since you don’t need an electrician to install power if there isn’t any where you want to place your new PDs. Additionally, regular Ethernet cable is rather inexpensive and is often already installed in the location. Installation and setup is always a concern so look for one that’s easy to connect to your existing network. And, make sure that it has the ports you need if you’re hoping to connect something that needs a physical connection like an older computer. In other words, if some of your devices are getting a good connection or the internet gets better the closer you are to the router, save some money and add an extender. Maybe you want your network to cover a couple of floors of a house or building, but some rooms are just not getting a signal. An extender is the perfect solution as it will take the existing signal, strengthen it and extend its reach so that you can access it or get a better connection where you couldn’t before. A PoE Extender can extend the 100-meter distance limitation for standard Ethernet and up to 3,300 feet. Some PoE extenders have two outputs and allow you to connect two PDs to the PSE at a distance of 200 meters.
By definition, however, a PoE extender is also a PoE injector since it makes images viewable by your network by reducing the amount of cabling needed. Should You Use a UTP or an STP Extender? Power over Ethernet (PoE) allows for installation of network devices including outside equipment without having to connect to AC power. PoE technology passes electric power and data over regular Cat5e (or better) network cable, which allows power to be delivered to remote areas without the need to install additional electrical infrastructure such as power outlets for every edge device. Also called endpoint, the typical endspan is a PoE Network Switch. Since the switch itself can power connected devices, there is no need for an additional power source between the PoE switch (PSE) and the connected PoE edge device (PD). Type of PoE extender (2): First, not all PoE repeaters can be daisy-chained, and second, the amount of power the extender draws varies.
