About this deal

The low end is most certainly accentuated on the Pioneer DM-40s. Whether that is good, depends on what you want from your monitors. When it comes to how it’s built, this speaker feels solid and firm. The speaker has a beautiful crescent diffuser to lead the high frequencies that nest around the bass driver. Furthermore, this speaker has two ports in the front. These ports ensure that you can mount the speaker next to a wall without effect. Pioneer DJ’s top mixers, DJ controller units, and CDJs cost a pretty penny, there is no way around that. However, in recent years the company has started leaning into the beginner-friendly market. The company’s efforts to create budget-friendly options of its gear have been praised by many due to the great results. The Pioneer DM-40 studio monitors offer excellent value. It’s because of this that they are often bundled with beginner controllers. For a few hundred dollars you can get a setup that gets you started in the world of DJing.

Dexter also specializes in managing and growing digital marketing platforms for leading international DJs, event brands, and venues. For a compact and cheap studio monitor the Pioneer DM-40’s have plenty going for them when it comes to sound quality. The second-best option is getting desk stands, and the third-best option is having some foam cushions, which Pioneer DJs kindly supply with their speakers. When it comes to compact studio monitors the Presonus Eris E3.5 is another excellent option. More suited to analytical listening than the DM40’s but not as satisfying for casual listening.

The front bass reflex speaker delivers rich and deep basses, capable of 3D stereo sound and has a wide stage picture, providing clear, lively sound even when used for mixing music or just listening to music. Only after the volume is above 70%, one can start to notice unpleasant artifacts coming through. However, having them blast at just below that amount will be more than enough power for most casual uses.

You can always trust that any product from Pioneer always comes with fantastic design and high-quality build Quality. The first thing you might notice about this speaker is that it has curved front edges that are not just for beauty. The most notable thing is that unbalanced cables can suffer from interference. This problem only really becomes an issue if you are running the cables over longer distances. Or if you have a large number of other cables near your unbalanced cables. Ideally, you want to have dedicated floor speaker stands, if your place allows for them. Having them increases the spread of the sound image and minimizes the vibrational bleeding of the cabinets. At this price point and for the use these speakers are intended for, that’s a good thing: What you primarily want when practising DJing is volume (and they have enough; 21W per side), and a warm, engaging sound with a lot of “thump”, so you can engage with the music even at lower volumes.

Great studio monitors are probably the most important sonic tool to help you create and shape your music – they are, essentially, your digital ears. The DM 40 have a sleek design that is quite unique. Curved front edges – this is not only to impress visually but also to minimize the unwanted resonance of frequencies. We’re passionate about the TV, hi-fi and home cinema products that we sell, but we also know that our customers have a lot of great ideas about what we should cover in our blog! These are especially helpful when placing your audio setup on a table because the table can act as a speaker extension itself. The Bluetooth module included on the DM-40 is simply for easier casual listening. Making the DM-40 an easier speaker to live with day to day, the inclusion of Bluetooth broadens the speakers appeal. Although we regularly used the Bluetooth connection with our phones and laptop we found the physical analogue cable sounded slightly better. The DM 40 Pioneer DJ’s speakers are front-ported, which minimizes the problematic crisp sound quality reflection issues of putting them too close to a rear wall.
