About this deal

The PEN E-PL7 is the chunkiest model in the range to date; they’ve been growing steadily larger and heavier since the E-PL1 and the E-PL7 is now almost a big as the E-P5. For the record the measurements are 115x67x38mm and the body with the battery and a card fitted weighs 357g. With the 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 EZ powered zoom fitted the depth becomes 61mm and it weighs 450g. They pushed PL slightly upward with specs and price, which is a good move, because people like me (possibly switching from a DSLR, expecting decent and swift operation) will at least consider buying the camera. IMHO, what a strange review. On one hand, the reviewer criticizes Olympus for producing a camera that is too point-and-shoot emphasized and then goes on to say that the camera can be customized to be very much acceptable to enthusiasts. I think he was a bit unfair by saying he was disappointed with his initial shooting experience without mentioning the customizing potential of the camera BEFOREmaking that statement.

The problem is, and always has been, that Olympus seems reluctant to make more of the touch screen to access and change camera settings, confining it more or less to focus, touch shooting and a few other limited roles. This is frustrating on other PEN models, but the E-PL7’s forward facing screen provides an opportunity to really make the most of the touch screen, unfortunately it’s an opportunity Olympus has failed to make the most of.The Xiaomi 12T Pro offers a whopping 200MP main camera, but how does this perform, and do the other cameras deliver? Joshua Waller puts it through its paces. Olympus PEN E-P7, Billigoat Designs, 14-42mm lens @17mm, 1.3s, f/7.1, ISO200, turning off noise reduction, and stopping down the lens improves detail captured

Build quality could be better, for example, if you squeeze the camera a little too hard then there is a noticeable creak, and you can see the bottom around the battery compartment flex, so I’d probably recommend you avoid squeezing it. Olympus Camera design team: "Hey look, now that we don't include an integrated flash that space can be used for the wifi, so we can still provide the grip-options on the right... Naah!"As usual for an Olympus release, the E-PL7 also gains some extra Art Filters. The company's enthusiasm for constantly expanding this feature is understandable, given that it pioneered the as-you-shoot processing effect in cameras. We're not entirely sure why you wouldn't do this once the image is on your smartphone but Olympus insists that customer research suggests people like to add filters on the camera and on their smartphones. Olympus fans have been waiting to see what OM Digital Solutions would do after the imaging division of Olympus was sold and renamed in January 2021. The Olympus PEN E-P7 is the first Micro Four Thirds camera to come from OM Digital Solutions. To test the PEN E-PL7’s continuous shooting performance I fitted it with a freshly formatted UHS-1 SD card, turned the stabilisation off, and selected 1/500 at 200 ISO. In the fastest Sequential H mode it fired off 16 Large Fine JPEGs at a rate of 8.5fps before slowing to a slightly erratic 2fps or so. So in actual fact there’s not much change from the earlier model’s continuous shooting capabilities. Except that on the E-PL7 the buffer clears with a second or two, so you can shoot another 16-frame burst almost immediately.

Otherwise it is an OK camera. The e-p5 impresses with a very quiet shutter release-Leica like. The twin dials are nice but the single dial of the pl7 works fine if you are using legacy lenses with aperture rings. The pl7 is definitely a fiddly camera-it would take some getting used to. Further to the right is the tactile shutter release button, with the Olympus PEN E-P7 readying itself for action in a second or so.

Image is not smaller than E-PL1. I have both cameras at home and compared images on the LCD. E-PL1 has 2.7" LCD while E-PL7 has 3″ LCD. 3:2 LCD aspect ratio makes E-PL7 images look same size as E-PL1 or just slightly bigger, not smaller for sure. While resolution is huge advantage for E-PL7. Here are some sample photos. I don't pixel peep so forgive me if I don't do this camera justice. I also reduced the sharpness in post. While both Olympus and Panasonic share the same lens mount, they take different approaches to stabilisation. Panasonic requires lenses with built-in optical stabilisation, while Olympus builds stabilisation into the actual camera bodies. The benefit of the Olympus approach is enjoying stabilization with any lens you attach, whereas on a Panasonic body you’ll only have stabilization on lenses which support it. Panasonic does, however, equip most of its zooms with optical stabilization, including of course the common kit options. Like Panasonic, Samsung’s NX series offers stabilised lenses rather than building stabilisaton into its bodies.

The Olympus PEN E-P7 is a mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera launched on 25 June 2021 by OM Digital Solutions under the Olympus brand. OM Digital Solutions became independent from Olympus Corporation on 9 October 2020 and took over the OM-D, PEN and ZUIKO brands. It is the first new model to be launched by OM Digital Solutions since its independence, with a retro-style design that echoes the design of the PEN-F launched in 2016, with aluminium dials and a pop-up flash. Though released recently, the E-P7 does not feature a USB Type-C port, but a Micro USB Type-B port as seen in previous generations. [1] [2] As for crop factor it cuts two ways. If you are shooting landscapes and displaying on a 9x16 monitor the 3:2 aspect ratio is an advantage. If you are shooting portraits and printing, the 4:3 aspect ratio is an advantage. The PEN E-PL7 inherits two movie effects from its predecessor which were originally introduced on the OM-D E-M5. Multi shot echo and One shot echo are really two variations on the same effect which freezes a single frame and holds it at reduced opacity while the action continues. Think of all those movies you’ve seen where someone has a drug slipped into their drink and you see their point of view as they stumble into the furniture and lose consciousness and you’ll get the idea. It has limited applications (unless you make a lot of those kinds of movies) but it can be disabled if you don’t want to be bothered with it. Also included is the feature which allows you to view the development of long exposures at fixed intervals on the LCD screen. OPPO's mid-range smartphone aims to provide a sophisticated camera system at an attractive price. Andy Westlake sees how it measures up.

It’s also worth pointing out that the top shooting speed of 15fps, achievable in silent shooting mode, means that you’re less likely to turn to this for shooting sports - especially as to achieve that speed, focus will need to be fixed to the first frame.
