About this deal

In 1976 when I got my 1st '250 all of the parts store catalogs showed N9Y for all TR6 and TR250. After repeatedly fouling these I consulted the owner's manual which called for UN12Y. Fitting these or its equivalent ( Autolite 55 ) ended the problem for good.

With a CR over 11:1, I haven't dared go to 5s. If you want to try it, I'd try in one cylinder and watch the colour very carefully for signs of overheating. A spark plug produces a high intensity electrical discharge (the spark) inside the combustion chamber, igniting your fuel to keep the engine firing. Suggest posting a photo of your existing plugs as they came out ... a look at the threads can offer some information about whether you’ve got an appropriate plug. -KB

The car ran well before, but I have no idea how long the plugs were in there for. They were normal grey/brown when they came out, and the gaps were probably nearer .70 thou, so imagine a fair while, although the engine has only covered circa 2k miles since a rebuild in 2003.

however Denso have given excellent results over the years, not just in std A series engines but in everything from tuned Minors to turbo charged modern performance engines, their platinum plugs are superb, yes they are expensive but will last around 60,000 miles with no noticeable loss of performance. Their iridium plugs are great for turbo cars where there will be very high compression under boost as they generally give a very strong spark. NGK is the brand leader in the UK spark plug market and are the world's biggest supplier to many major car manufacturers. Each and every one of their products are designed to meet the most rigorous standards and are the professionals' choice because of their quality and technical excellence. Their plugs can be found in use by teams in F1, WRC and MotoGP. Put simply, NGK genuine spark plugs are the workhorse at the heart of smooth-running engines around the world. It does this thousands of times each minute. Over time spark plugs start to break down, resulting in a poor spark. A healthy engine needs good clean spark plugs. I went to a BP5ES plug (slightly hotter than the BP6) and switched to 87 octane gas as another step toward reaching my goals.where as NGK are generally fit and forget, I don't often use bosch plugs but have nothing against them, I understand the generally preferred plug for TR5/6s is the NGK BP6ES, but note the BP5ES is specifically for use in lead free head - VUX's head is gas-flowed and unleaded. I recall that one-time prolific poster on this forum, 'bmcecosse', told a tale of a mate's car that wouldn't go.........they tried a few things and in the end Roy substituted the NKG plugs for Champion and the car fired up first time. He then threw the NKG plugs into a neighbouring field! I note that in the current Moss catalogue , whilst that grade is quoted for 'standard heat range', BP5ES is quoted for use with unleaded fuel and BP7ES for use with increased comp. ratio. I use the BP6ES in my 6 which has a lead-free conversion and a compression ratio of 9.65:1, but occasionally suffers fouled plugs from cold start, which is an inconvenience to say the least. The car in running triple Webers and is fed Shell V Max. Would a switch to the BP 5 plugs improve matters? The carbs have been set up on a rolling road, but, by the time fine jet adjustments were being made, the engine was at full working temperature so cold-start issues were not apparent.

The proper correlation between NGK and Champion is the question, and at the end of the day the colour ought to govern the choice. But coming full circle, you raise an excellent point and I will put in whatever plugs are currently in there and see how she behaves.I once fitted a set of Champion plugs to a Honda 400/4 motorbike I had bought in the early 1980's, I kept the old NGK ones under the seat in the tool tray. The guy I was dealing with from Champion told me that they had a 10% failure rate straight from production Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four. I know it's been a little while since I've posted. The car is here but still in winter storage out in the burbs, so I only get over there every couple of weeks for a little while since the garage isn't heated and it's 40 miles away (better than 2,200, right?). I'll be bringing it up to my place once the salt has been washed off the roads and the temps come up a little. This spark plug has corrugated ribs, triple gasket seal, copper core for more effective heat removal, a 21 mm (13/16 inches) hex size, and 0.9 mm (0.035 inches) gap. I had to get rid of the slop in the distributor, replace the throttle shaft bearings (vacuum leak), power valve, accelerator pump diaphragm , and plastic float (replaced with brass) on my Weber 32/36. One new Champion failed after about five miles so I swapped it for one of the old ones. The following week another one failed so I threw them in the bin and put four new NGK ones in and never had any more trouble.
