With the Free series Leatherman sought to once again revolutionize the multi tool world. Overall we think they did a pretty good job of it. The Free P4 in particular is one of the easiest multi tools to open and use that we’ve ever seen. If you’re an expert and don’t mind the robust structure offered by P4, then going with this tool will serve you well. However, for those who need some extra edge and are anticipating the use of a saw or serrated knife, the P4 is a perfect option for these. I absolutely LOVE how all of the tools are accessible from the outside of it, without having to open the pliers and the whole thing, and the overall quality of every part and placement of every tool. The can opener is a stand alone tool that was easily able to cut through the can we tried it on. The ruler and file felt a lot like the one found on the Wingman. The ruler is significantly shorter than we would have liked at just 1.41 inches. The file is your standard wood/metal file and worked as well as any we’ve seen.
This will make a perfect thing to have in your camping gear or to keep with you while you are going for an adventure to enjoy the right edge of perfection and utility at all times. If you’re already on the prowl for a new multi tool though you should seriously consider the Free P4. Leatherman is well known for the quality and durability of their individual tools. Our experience with the Free P4 has shown that they’ve kept this dedication to quality while upgrading the overall experience. For a real knife and tool-hound like myself, the anticipation for the new Leatherman “Free” series of multitools was almost too much to bear. After all, I’ve known “a new and revolutionary” tool series was coming from Leatherman for three years now, but was given very little detail. Then, in January, when SHOT show came around, I finally got that first taste of “Free” through some internet digging — my child-like excitement was almost uncontainable. So, thanks go out to the folks at Leatherman for getting one of the first test samples of the Free P2 sent to me to fawn over.
It might seem like a hassle at first, but you can blast these tools with compressed air, and that will be more than enough to keep these items clean and sorted. The Leatherman Free P4 is a great multi tool on its own. As anyone who’s ever owned a multi tool can tell you though, there’s always an accessory or add on that will make it a bit better.So, if you are looking to get basic stuff done and just need a tool that can be used for all the different basic needs, the Free P2 will get the job done for you. As I noted above, the FREE carries with it a novelty that’s hard to resist playing with. While it’s not as dramatic (or menacing) as a butterfly knife, the one-handed action is unlike any other multi I’ve used.
