Lagavulin 40 yo 1979/2019 (49.1%, The Syndicate, cask #112, 188 bottles) - 090420- by Angus - 180420 For my part, I enjoyed this dram. It perhaps wasn’t quite as smoky as I remembered although I seemed to find more of the Lagavulin DNA the further I got into the bottle. Maybe it doesn’t quite live up to the memory I have of the same whisky from six years ago but that’s not a very scientific analysis. Maybe it’s me that’s changed, rather than the whisky. I can’t say for sure without tasting two batches side by side. In any case I still found it to be a good quality whisky that’s positioned at a decent price. Lagavulin 27 yo 1991/2018 (51.8%, OB ‘Casks of Distinction’, cask #0016, sherry puncheon, 432 bottles) - by Angus - 180420 Originally released as a distillery exclusive for Islay's 2021 Jazz Festival, this 13-year-old single malt was matured in refill American oak casks, before finishing in casks that previously held mezcal! A jazzy release indeed, limited to just 3,000 bottles.

Lagavulin 21 yo 1997/2018 (56.6%, OB for ‘European Lagavulin Fans’, cask #0001, European oak, 158 bottles) - 060519 - by Angus - 271018 John Johnston founded the Lagavulin distillery in 1816, though there had been as many as ten illicit distilleries in the area since 1742. Lagavulin was home to legal distilling under Johnston’s eye, however. Shortly after it opened, a distillery named Ardmore was opened close by, though this became part of Lagavulin a few decades later.Take colour, for instance. Lagavulin 16’s deeper, amber hue is just more inviting to me. There’s a sense of depth, of a story well-told. Don’t get me wrong, the pale charm of Lagavulin 8 has its appeal, but it didn’t ignite the same anticipation. Lagavulin is one of a trio of distilleries sat on the south coast of Islay. Lagavulin produces some of the smokiest whisky Scotland has to offer, with the Lagavulin 16 Year Old standing as their most storied expression. On the positive side, its flavour profile is surprisingly versatile for a peaty whisky. Its sweet notes and hints of fruit and malt can make it appealing to a wide range of whisky lovers. On the downside, the Lagavulin 8 can be a bit harsh on the nose for the uninitiated. Its smoke can come across as intense, even overwhelming. And visually, its pale colour may not seem as inviting as the honeyed hues of other whiskies. Lagavulin decommissioned their own floor maltings in 1974 and they began to get their malt from Port Ellen. The distillery ran a two day working week until the 1980s, which has resulted in some problems meeting the high demand for their whisky over the years.

Lagavulin 25 yo 1997/2023 (50.7%, OB, Prima & Ultima, refill American oak cask, 1013 bottles) - 021023 It's the 2016 edition of the Lagavulin Islay Jazz Festival bottling. A collectable bottle released during their 200th Anniversary year - the whisky was drawn from refill American oak hogsheads and first fill American oak barrels. Lagavulin 16 year old single malt is my all-time favorite, so needless to say, I’m a big fan of Lagavulin distillery. Lagavulin is not known for wide range of whiskies: they have their flagship whisky, the 16YO, and a cask strength 12YO – both absolute beauties. So when I heard that they were releasing an 8 year old Lagavulin single malt, I was excited. Even though the skeptic in me was having some doubts. Lagavulin has done things their way, no jumping on NAS whisky band wagon, no over branding – just simply making great whisky. The 16 is a symphony where each note, while assertive, never overpowers the other. It’s this intricate balance that has earned Lagavulin 16 its place as an Islay classic. I personally find it best enjoyed neat or with a drop of water to open up its complex profile.Palate: Smokey peat appears first on the palate, followed by coriander seed, barley sugar, cumin powder, smoked kipper and marzipan.

Dun Naomhaig Water ‘Edition Maltmill, batch 3’ (40%, Reifferscheid, Romantic Rhine Collection, bourbon and sherry, 180 bottles, +/-2015) - 100316 Four 70cl bottles of natural cask strength 12 year old Lagavulin from the Diageo Special Releases 2023, 2022, 2021 and 2020. An incredible collection!

On his new position, Paisley said: “Coming from Islay, it’s a real source of pride to be given the chance to manage one of Scotland, and the world’s, most iconic distilleries. Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products. No doubt about it, both have comparable expressions of their own. There’s a wide maturity gap of 8 years and the differences are conspicuous (not to mention the prices). I can’t wait to get started and look forward to supporting the team to continue producing such a high-quality and highly revered product.”
