There are a bunch of dials to note health and fame for the good guys and the bad guys (upper left), some Power cards (lower left) and volcano (right).
These red dice activate the “bad news” parts of the game: they summon minions, give the Boss fame, and build crystals. Something big enough to threaten every monster and make them fight together against the same enemy… Each player’s turn seems fairly solitary. There really wasn’t a lot of cooperation. Each player would really get into their turn and making their decisions (which is good!), but would tend to focus on the dice rolls to the exclusion of others. There was a little talk, but not much. This doesn’t have to be a bad thing (some people like having their own turn and agency), but could with item #2 below, this was really a detractor.

That said, there’s definitely more to think about when it comes to what you’re aiming for with each roll, and how you apply the results you eventually get. King of Tokyo is a 2011 game created by Magic: The Gathering creator Richard Garfield. This series includes the base game and all of its expansions, as well as King of New York, King of Monster Island and all of their expansions.
Their goal: allow their minions to set up the pylons needed to construct the portal. To win, the players must defeat the Boss before they manage to activate the portal or defeat even a single Monster. Like most cooperative games, the game alternates between “ some bad stuff happens” (from the Minions and Boss dice) and “ some good stuff happens” (from the player dice, Power cards, and Support tokens). There is a notion of movement, as players can usually only do things if they are the zone with the thing of interest. Gameplay alternates Boss/Player/Boss/Player, etc goes until the Monsters beat the Boss (cooperatively), the Boss defeats any Monster, 3 pylons are built, or there are no Minions in the bag! Solo Play There’s a cool volcano in the box that you build: it serves as a dice tower for the Boss (the Bad Guy) dice! So, my first game was pretty bad: I lost horribly as every single Minion activated!! I realized I played wrong, so then I tried again: this time, I got the rule wrong that you only activate dice in the Boss’ Zone and THEN YOU TAKE THEM OFF AND REROLL them at the start of the next turn!

Monster Island first premiered on June 1, 2019 on the Syfy channel, [2] exactly one day after Godzilla: King of the Monsters. King of Monster Island has a weird-sized box: see above with a Coke Canfor scale (this weird shape may be why it fails The Chair Test?) While some dice faces – like claws to damage enemies, hearts to heal, and energy you can accumulate to buy upgrades – will be familiar to veterans of the previous game, others are new. Feet allow you to move board segments; spanners let you buy support tiles which can be activated for an extra dice face; and stars give you experience rather than points. I am not sure why, but it took me three times to play this game to get the rules right. The first time I played solo, I thought that all Minions did their thing on the Boss’s turn: Nope! Just the Minion IN THE ZONE with the Boss! It even says that at the start of step 4 (see below). Whilst previous entries in the beginner board game series pit monsters against one another for control of territory to terrorise, King of Monster Island has the kaiju working together to defeat an even bigger and badder monster threatening to destroy the entire planet. Imagine Suicide Squad, but with robots, crab abominations and giant aliens. Meehan, Lolies and Wheels play the Dark Edition of King of Tokyo.Three Survivors Crustaceous Rex, the Giant Bat, and King Cobra were rounded up and imprisoned on the island. The island utilized massive force fields to keep King Cobra and Crustaceous Rex from fighting the Giant Bat was allowed to roam freely but prevented from using its sonic shrieks by a special collar and kept from leaving the island by lasers. Cardboard Monster Figures with 6 Plastic Stands (Captain Fish, Drakonis, Kong, Mantis, Rob, Sheriff) Minions can also help build pylons, but mostly they do damage to players, or shield other minions from damage. As you can probably appreciate from this rundown, there’s a fair amount of upkeep and admin to keep the game flowing – and that slows down the action.
