But Batman has another plan in motion: distract Joker on the streets of Gotham while he investigates the cave network below for a cure to the toxin. Joker learns of Batman's true intentions and confronts him. The two engage in a ruthless and bloody battle as a pool glows green beside them, both the cure to the toxin and the same regenerative power that has helped Joker heal over the years. The Joker screams that the joke is finally over; their relationship has been perverted in his eyes and the laughter dead. But a falling stalactite injures Joker severely and he attempts to crawl into the regenerative pool. Batman holds onto him, preventing him while also sending a sample of the pool up above. As the cave collapses around him and Joker, Batman lays still, content in knowing he saved Gotham.
