This believable and immersive quality is amplified by the way the names, languages and histories of cultures and characters are deftly threaded into the work, and by the way the themes echo half-remembered stories from our own world.I would have liked to see some of the illustrations reproduced with a bit more contrast, and few of Lee's beautiful watercolours are included here, but the many pencil sketches are a treat: inspiring and often humorous. Alan Lee's fluency is breathtaking. I am so very grateful to have been given the chance to come along on the journey of the Fellowship of the Ring. To visit so many wonderful places in a land of myths and magic. To meet so many fascinating men, elves, dwarves and other legendary peoples and creatures...
