About this deal

Further, I promise this is it for complaints, the horror aspects were kept too obscure. I wanted more. I liked the build and tension initially. Without giving much away: I can absolutely say this was wild, jaw dropping, intense ride! My only concern is there are too many characters and some of them are truly annoying and easy to forget. I wish there were less competitors. I liked Harri, whose life has been incredibly challenging for the past few years. She not only lost her son five years ago she also lost her last partner to suicide. She is now working in a different precinct - one that has a team of detectives who are a mix of good and bad. I will definitely keep looking out for Kiersten White’s work in whichever format it comes, but I *do* think I’m done with theme park horror for a while! 🤣 So now she's seen it. She knows what's out there. It doesn't make anymore sense than it did before, but at least she can move from horror - the fear of the unknown - to terror - the fear of the known. Terror is almost a comfort at this point, a familiar friend."

And finally, abandon all use of clichés! Only when an author has conclusively shown they don’t need them can said author pull one out just for fun—and then it has to be done with verve, flair, aplomb, etc. Not because it was the first thing that came to mind. The setting for Ms. Clark’s novel is Chicago. A city well-known to its several million inhabitants, at least modestly well-known by many more who have traveled and vacationed there, and even known at some superficial level by those who’ve seen Chicago’s streets, shops, skyline, downtown, and more in innumerable television shows, movies, video games, etc.A high-stakes hide-and-seek competition in an abandoned amusement park comes to life in this graphic novel thriller. January 6, 2023 – @ 41% I am happy with the way the story is developing, but I am not impressed with the narration - despite the reader's enchanting first name :) January 8, 2023 – @77% I think the story has become confusing, but I will finish it tonight. The narration is still grating, distracting from my listening experience :( The art was gorgeous, bright and colourful. Maybe could have had some changes to the layout, there was just a lot of yellow commentary boxes through most of it. But overall amazing. The art was amazing and really set the eerie tone of the park while still being so vibrant and eye catching.

Big thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me access to the ARC of this in exchange for an honest review, and I am super excited to share my thoughts on this one after having read the novel last year! It was a bit difficult to read the words on the NetGalley app, but the artwork was beautifully done. There were also a lot of gory kills. We follow multiple different perspectives as the contest begins and a Hunger Games-type vibe falls over the narrative. A marvelously creepy thrill ride of a book that keeps twisting until the very end.” —Karen M. McManus, #1 New York Times bestselling author of One of Us Is Lying

Overall this worked for me, and I had a good time reading it, despite its flaws. I'd definitely read another horror novel from this author in the future!

I do not intend to say much about the book itself. It began well enough, but about half-way through the plot(s) started to meander, revealing this piece of important information, then that piece, eventually draining the book of almost all its dramatic tension, leaving little or nothing to the listener's imagination by the end of the story. Content warnings for: PTSD, trauma, violence, gore, murder, abusive parents, alcoholism, racism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, betrayal DNF’d due to the narrator. The story isn’t gripping enough to drive me to read it though - hard to tell how much of that is Tracy Clark’s writing and how much lands on the narrator. I did, however, like that there are no easy fixes for Harriet; she’s still got to find ways to keep moving through her day, despite her terrible grief. I’m interested in continuing the series to see what’s next for this character. Meanwhile, adult twin brother and sister, Bodie and Amelia, wrestle with their upbringing by a father who had a penchant for murdering young, red-headed women with blue eyes. They haven’t seen him for years, not since he dropped them off as freshmen at college, both of their tuitions completely paid. But the years they spent under his roof, where they became aware of what he was doing, have left their mark. Might one of them be involved in the murder? Or their father, if he's even still alive?Among the good things—Ms. Clark started with a plan, plotted it out, and followed the plan and outline and too the reader to the conclusion. Things moved in sequence, without any obvious temporal contradictions. She managed to convey some identity regarding her characters. (Though generally nowhere near enough.) The atmosphere in the abandoned theme park was creepy as hell, and I thought the slow reveal of the baddie was well done for ultimate tension. The challenge is simple. All fourteen competitors must spend seven days hiding in an abandoned amusement park from dawn to dusk. There’s only one rule: Don’t get caught. The bad was a list of the basics. First up: characterization was superficial, and often left behind. The best-drawn character was a minor one, and an unlikeable one. Many characters were little better than cardboard cutouts moved around as necessary for the plot. Though there were several cops in the story, the group scenes were such that the speaking lines could, generally speaking, come from anyone, as could many of the actions. The boss was so stereotypical and one-dimensional that it would’ve been better had her part been phoned in.

Fourteen competitors, the list is approved, seven days in an abandoned amusement park, cell-free zone, sleeping outside is part of the game, a cash prize, houses of fun and terror. It's a "horror reality show". Haunting, startling, unrelenting, and unexpectedly heartbreaking, Hide draws you inexorably in among the thorns and rust, where the monsters are both intimately familiar and horrifyinglyunfathomable.” —Delilah S. Dawson, New York Times bestselling author of The Violence I found this detective myster thriller to be an enjoyable read. A little bit psychological thriller and a little bit police procedural, this novel seemed to expertly blend the two. I really appreciated the twists and turns in this book and would definitely read any sequels to this book. This book will live in your head rent-free. When I wasn’t reading Hide, I was thinking about it—it’s one of those rare books that twists itself into your consciousness. Kiersten White has outdone herself.” —Victoria Lee, author of A Lesson in Vengeancein a second unwelcome surprise, the ARC's "dear reader" letter (am i the only one who reads these?) proclaims the story to be: an of-the-moment, scarily precise diagnosis of class and privilege and generational wealth.
