About this deal

The super critical, nitrogen infused FuelCell provides really good energy return and makes it feel like a super foam. It’s not as bouncy as ZoomX but more bouncy than Hyper Burst, DNA Flash and Pwrrun PB. The New Balance Rebel v3 is one of those trainers that just keeps getting better and better with each update. New Balance said that their goal with the new version was to make it appeal to a wider group of runners, to make it 10 – 15% more democratic. I agree the foam feels rather ‘spongy’ at the start but after about 4-5km, you do feel the foam starting to ‘compress’. That may not be to some runners liking but I found it ok even for my second run which was 17km. If not for the looming specter of premature upper failure, the New Balance Fuelcell Rebel V2 is a delightful running shoe. There is also reinforcement around the eyelets and heel collar which gives necessary structure, but it is still sleek with minimal padding. The race-weight tongue is a good design—it is a thin, wide foam piece. It has good coverage, some rigidity, mitigates lace bite, and is easy to lay flat. Comfort and foothold are both top notch. The upper is hardly noticed on the foot and the foot doesn’t slide around in the upper. Overall it’s a sleek, unobtrusive, and light-on-the-foot upper.

Fuel Cell is not a single foam but a family of midsole different foams with differing compositions, shoe designs and ride characteristics and uses but which all focus, according to New Balance on being " performance, speed and rebound driven shoes." , Dr. Matthew Klein is a 150 lb male with notable PRs of 14:45 for 5k and 2:32:44 for the full marathon. He typically runs 70-100 miles per week and trains at a variety of paces from 8min per mile recovery runs to 4:40 per mile 1k repeats. He prefers firmer and responsive shoes with snug heels and medium to wide toe boxes. The stability guy of the group, he also prefers a little stability in his footwear. However, as a researcher, clinician and running shoe aficionado, he will run in anything. IG handle @kleinrunsdptEven the outsole coverage was mostly limited to the forefoot, and only a tiny slab of rubber covered the heel. Matt: "The upper on the Rebel v2 is great. It is a thin mesh that holds my foot snuggly and comfortably. Underfoot, this shoe is not as stable as other models, but the soft and structured upper gave me the confidence to use the Rebel v2 no matter which runs I was going on."

With 30 mm of soft FuelCell foam underfoot, the Rebel v2 offers runners ample protection from the impact of the roads. As a lightweight trainer, this shoe is not necessarily the best long-distance companion, but our testers are confident that runners will comfortably enjoy distances around the half-marathon mark. The new NDURANCE outsole also gives the Rebel v2 improved traction that should instill a lot of confidence while out on the roads. There’s no two ways about it: New Balance has a winner on their hands with the FuelCell Rebel v2. It’s everything you want in a lightweight daily trainer, and more: Feathery light on your foot with a great overall fit, and well cushioned, yet responsive and brimming with energy return. It is truly a versatile shoe, and a top choice everyday trainer. The midfoot and rearfoot are narrow compared to the forefoot. The outsole rubber placement also makes the shoe more suited to forefoot striking. On the forefoot, the rubber panel is different and it makes the ride firmer. There are no longer triangular cutouts in the rubber so the squishy foam can’t push through the holes when the forefoot is loaded. The entire forefoot is covered with soft, flexible rubber. The forefoot rubber extends down into the midfoot on the lateral side. Unlike many other tempo-worthy shoes, the Rebel 2 doesn’t have a slim midsole. It’s actually quite wide through the midfoot, with the rearfoot midsole extending past the heel line. After 100 miles of running, the Rebel v2 still holds up very well. The outsole shows little signs of wear, while the upper appears as new. Dirt and dust are the only signs of wear so far.

While the Rebel V1’s Fuelcell midsole wasn’t bad, the V2 elevates its game by using the same Fuelcell foam as the RC Elite and Fuelcell TC. Ryan/Jacob/Sam/Michael: Highly flexible midsole doesn't provide much stability, and limits toe-off power It’s lightweight, soft, responsive, grips well, and priced reasonably for its level of tech. Hey, there’s even an optional width and a size US 16 available. I must be honest, when images of the Rebel v2 first leaked online last year, I wasn’t impressed. However, after seeing it in hand and in marketing material, I’m now a big fan of the design. The outsole is improved too. The new strategically placed NDURANCE rubber provides similar – if not better – traction with more flex for a smoother transition. Here’s how the toe box looks from the inside. The tongue edges on the top are soft and non-irritating.
