And let’s not forget the actual mystery of the book – who blew up Ness? Just when I thought I had figured it out, the book takes another turn. And it all makes so much sense. This was honestly a joy to read and figure out. Logic – 8/10 The twists in the plot are decent, particularly in the first 3/4 of the book. I'm not a big fan of the very end, because the book enters the paranormal realm there more distinctly than sci-fi, but overall it works. Review copy was received from NetGalley. Will it be a series?

Man, I really wish I'd gotten around to my advanced reading copy sooner so that I could have been an AGGRESSIVE promoter of it during its release week. I have fallen down on my duties!! One of my favorite books of the year! Phenomenally fun, with a vivid, vicious world that's stuffed with monsters (both human and otherwise) and a heroine you'll root for. It’s set in Newham (a city so crime-ridden it makes Gotham looks tame by comparison) and follows nineteen year old Ness, who has an irrational fear of nightmares (and of becoming one) ever since her sister turned into a man-eating spider and went on a killing spree. Priya steps into the apartment, eyebrows angry slashes. “The Department of Nightmare Defense saved your life.” Nightmares, whether they became one or were killed by one. But people who turned into homicidal giant bugs are actually surprisingly rare. Today’s excerpt is the first book in a new duology from Rebecca Schaeffer. Ever since Ness’ sister became a man eating spider, she’s been terrified. And she’ll do anything to avoid becoming the victim again, even if that means lying low among the Friends of the Restful Soul, a questionable organization that may or may not be a cult.Cy is a more complex character. A boy turned Nightmare Vampire due to the fear of his father who chose to become one, his wit bounces off Ness's sarcasm so well and the scenes they were both in were some of the best. I do want to see more from Ness's friend Priya in the next book, as she only appeared a few times.

Whether that means becoming a Nightmare that’s monstrous only in appearance, to transforming into a twisted, unrecognizable creature that terrorizes the city, no one is safe. Ness will do anything to avoid becoming another victim, even if that means lying low among the Friends of the Restful Soul, a questionable organization that may or may not be a cult.The nightmares are a unique concept that was executed perfectly, in my opinion. No one could've done it better.
