About this deal

If you aren’t bothered about the smarts, you can program the button to cycle through the headphones’ three noise-cancelling levels instead (‘low’, ‘high’ or ‘off’). But while these headphones have an enjoyable sound, their rivals are a clear step ahead. The WH-1000XM3 (and newer WH-1000XM4) have an earthier bass and more insight, while the PX (and more recent PX7) have a better sense of rhythm and dynamics. Verdict

The Bose QuietComfort 35 II Gaming Headset features the same neutral-leaning frequency response as the QC35 II did. While there’s a little wobbling on the chart in the high end, and notable bump in the sub-bass, but for the most part pretty much everything should sound how it should. These are headphones that fit our target quite well all things considered. Lows, mids, and highs Pairing the QC35s is a breeze. You slide the power slider all the way to the right to put the headphones in pairing mode, and then you simply select them from your phone or laptop's Bluetooth menu. Slide the power switch toward the Bluetooth symbol, and hold it there until you hear a voice prompt letting you know the headphones are ready to pair.Using Google Assistant with the Bose QC35 II NC works just like it would on Google Home. You can ask it to read headlines, add reminders, or myriad other questions. The Assistant will also read you your notifications as they come in, which is nice but may be redundant if you have a smartwatch already. In short, the addition of Google Assistant is nice to have but is by no means the reason you should buy the Bose QC35 II NC: buy this headphone for its excellent noise cancellation, balanced sound, and incredible comfort. The headphones are very good at switching between multiple connections. I had my pair of QC35s connected to both my laptop and my phone, and the headphones had no trouble switching between the two as I played music alternately from both devices. The QuietComfort 35 II have great handlings on any music you send their way. We begin with The Beatles’ Let It Be , connected to a MacBook Pro, and these headphones impressively manage to dig up details you might not otherwise hear.

The QuietComfort 35 II certainly live up to the 'comfort' part of their name. At 310g, they are significantly lighter than the B&W PX and have a softer grip than Sony’s headphones. I wasn't completely sold on the Active EQ features of the headphones which boosts the bass frequencies slightly as you lower the volume to compensate for how lower volumes tend to bias higher frequencies.

But now we are talking to our speakers, our watches and our phones, it makes sense that we should be able to talk to our headphones as well. That’s the thinking behind the Bose QuietComfort 35 II, the updated version of the QuietComfort 35 that came out in 2016. It's a minor point, but whenever you turn the headphones on they helpfully play a short audio notification of both the device they're connected to as well as how much battery life is left. It rounds this to the closest 10%, but it's still a helpful indicator to have. Have you tried turning them off and on again? I know, this seems basic, but you’d be surprised how many technological bugs can be fixed with a simple reboot. If this doesn’t work, continue on to the next steps.

We've updated the Noise Isolation score and text. The 4.5.2 software update made the ANC slightly worse than before. Most listeners will find the sound quality of the Bose great if taken in isolation. Audiophiles will want to go with the Sony WH-1000XM3 or Sennheiser Momentum Wireless 2 instead.Music Share allows you to stream music to two pairs of Bose headphones, all from a single device. This feature can be accessed through the Bose Connect App, and are compatible with the following devices: If you’re connected to both a laptop and a smartphone (the QuietComfort 35 II have the ability to connect to two devices at once), we find that activating the Google Assistant to read a notification on our phone also starts up iTunes on our MacBook. No aptX support. The only high quality Bluetooth codec supported by these headphones is AAC, and this is only compatible with iOS, not Android. In terms of sound, the Bose QC35 II NC is good, but not class leading. While tonal balance is relatively neutral with a slight mid-bass bump, the sound is somewhat soft when compared to competitors like the Sony WH-1000X M2 (previously the Sony MDR-1000X). This means dynamic range is a bit limited and makes for a somewhat dull presentation. Resolution is good but not great and sound stage is about average. As with all noise-cancelling headphones, the QC35's are best at cancelling out consistent low frequencies like the rumble of a train or plane rather than higher-pitched office chatter, but even the latter is drowned out to a certain extent by the padding around the headphone's earcups.
