Detective Constable Sahra Guleed; Attached to Belgravia Murder Investigation Team, often works with Peter when his cases are in London. The secret to the Rivers series has always been the excellent balance between fantasy and police work thatAaronovitchcreates. I read a lot of crime fiction and the best are those that make the procedural nature of the job enjoyable to read. Aaronovitch manages to do this with magical procedure. DC Grant has always been a curious cop, by book nine he is also experienced. The basics have been covered and Grant is able to indulge in some fun experiments that help to solve the case. Molly; The Folly's domestic helper, of not entirely clarified species, but she has been referred to as fae-like in the PC Grant novel " Foxglove Summer".Police Constable Peter Grant; an officer in the Metropolitan Police and the first official apprentice wizard in sixty years. This series is a constant joy to read....I’ve been looking forward all year to find out what happened next, and the book did not disappoint.”—Genevieve Cogman, author of The Invisible Library But what he doesn’t know is that he’s going to encounter something — and somebody — that nobody ever expects… [2] List of returning characters [ ]

Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Nightingale; head of the Folly and the last officially sanctioned English Wizard. However, this one is a good return to form. Much more in keeping with the first books, which are still by far the strongest in the series. Aaronovitch showcases a superlative blend of whimsy and grit in the eighth Rivers of London urban fantasy…. Jim Butcher meets Douglas Adams in this winning series installment.”— Publishers Weekly (starred)

Danni closed her eyes and slowed her breathing. It was hard to tell behind the glasses, mask, and hood, but I think she frowned before looking at me. Winter's Gifts is a novella set after Lies Sleeping, [10] published in June 2023. It follows FBI Agent Kimberley Reynolds, introduced in Whispers Underground, who has subsequently become an ally of the Folly. I am also concerned that Beverly is turning into a supportive romantic partner to Peter rather than a budding power in her own right, as she was earlier in the series. I miss the Beverley who flooded Covent Garden to save lives and I hope it’s only her pregnancy that has sidelined her and that now that the kids are born, she’ll start using her powers more again. Lovers of the Rivers of London series will enjoy this book. I did, but I don’t feel it is the best of the series. The plot was fairly complex and there were a lot of new characters which made it a bit difficult to follow. I had to listen a second time to really understand it.

The latest in his Rivers of London novels, which follow a close-knit team of specialist London cops as they battle the supernatural while gaining tantalising glimpses into London’s past, is now available – the twelfth instalment, if one ignores a parallel series of graphic novels that take the Rivers universe into the low twenties. So called because the series centres around the forgotten waterways of London, each with its own, often quirky spiritual personification, from Old Man Thames down through the genius loci of smaller tributaries such as the Tyburn and the Fleet, each bringing with it another aspect of the city’s shrouded past, and building to form a coherent and convincing underpinning for the magical traditions and practices upon which Aaronovitch has built his various tales. Chapman: [slightly irritatedly and with exaggeratedly clear accent] One of the cross beams has gone out askew on the treadle. The case itself is another interesting one that sees Grant and others in the Specialist Unit visit parts of London and beyond. It is full of the secret societies and misuse of magic that you have come to love about the series. The banter between the officers is also there. Aaronovitch always grounds the stories by making the interaction between the police and the public so entertaining. There is a cynicism and humour to the police that feels authentic. I am wondering what that could mean for this world and for Peter.Ximinez: NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition! Our chief weapon is surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise.... Our two weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency.... Our *three* weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency...and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope.... Our *four*...no... *Amongst* our weapons.... Amongst our weaponry...are such elements as fear, surprise.... I'll come in again. Varvara Sidorovna Tamonina (aka. The mystery at the center of Amongst Our Weapons was intricate and fresh, possibly the best in the series (the other that’s in contention with that for me is the one from Foxglove Summer). I wasn’t expecting this mystery’s twists and turns, and the resolution to how to stop the angel from killing again was creative, surprising, and engaging. Some far-reaching consequences and culminations took place late in the book, too. I wouldn’t quite call Amongst Our Weapons a gamechanger but it came close. At Dragonmeet convention in London, on 30 November 2019, it was announced that a role-playing game based on the book series would be published by Chaosium. [20] The game was released in PDF version on 30 November 2022, pending book version. Aaronovitch in particular has made great strides in taking what was predominantly a US phenomenon in the ‘80s and ‘90s, and not only bringing it bang-up-to-date, but also immersing it in a combination of British wit and culture which has turned out to thoroughly suit the genre.
