About this deal

There is a limited amount of player interaction, mainly in the form of the lord powers, and whilst these include some ‘take-that’ moments, they are fairly light, and won’t ruin the game for players at the sharp end of this. Players gain influence points (victory points) in several ways, but the core path involves exploring the depths to defeat monsters (worth random influence points) and gain allies; allies are used to then recruit lords (worth varying amounts of influence), and lords are used to control locations (which have their own criteria for gaining influence). The game board depicts the council itself, in stunning detail, and has space for cards from the main three elements of the game – the depths, the council, and the court.

In my opinion, the rulebook would have been stronger if the “clarifying” section hit on each Lord and Location instead of just a handful. I can understand how different players might interpret some of these cards differently and we should never have to go to an auxiliary source to get accurate information. This aside, the rest of the rules are laid out perfectly and there are plenty of detailed pictures to help walk the user through the varying actions one might take. I can talk about the different types of cards, the game board, or the various tokens that come with the game, but the first thing that is going to hit you in the face is the absolutely STUNNING artwork in Abyss. Artist Xavier Collette did an amazing job with his illustrations. From the second you open up the box (which comes in 5 different covers), you are greeted with a variety of highly thematic visuals. From the variety on the Lord cards to the excellently illustrated game board (that shows the council chamber), I just loved everything about the artwork in Abyss. This is easily one of my favorites to come out in a long time.Washing over all of that is some really excellent visual design. All of the symbology is very clear and understandable and the artwork is attractive and worth more than one look. Furthermore, there's a color code attached to both Allies and Lords; the former by race (Seahorses are yellow, Squids are blue, etc.) and the latter by guild (Merchants are green, Soldiers are red, etc.), so it's easy to remember which sets will work with the greater sets that they're purchasing. It also provides an easy reminder of how the Council, made up of Allies not taken in Exploration, can be a solid option if there are multiple purple Allies (Jellyfish) and, likewise, a number of Mage Lords waiting to be recruited. The level of complication is presented by the choices to be made and not by the rules themselves, which is why I think the game is so approachable by both gamerz and the norms. Even more importantly, it's a set collection game that actively encourages interaction between players. This isn't just a tableau-builder where you spend the whole evening staring at the six inches directly in front of you. You have to pay attention to what others are doing before they spoil your plans and the drafting action, of course, is one of the crucial moments in that whole approach.

Last point about the Lords is that their power is impacted by which guild they are a part of. This is just a really fun thematic touch as you align yourself with certain guilds that are going to help you achieve your goals. There are Soldiers that are worth fewer Influence Points (what you want at the end of the game for victory) but allow you to negatively impact your opponents. Elsewhere, there are Politicians that help you sway and secure the use of future Lords. With there being 35 Lords, I’m sure some are unbalanced but if so, it hasn’t made a big difference in any of the matches I’ve played, and these cards stand out as a high point of the game for me. The currency of the game is represented by opaque white pearls, which do a great job of carrying on the undersea theme. Players store their pearls in oyster shaped dishes, another great touch in line with the theme. Once a player recruits their seventh lord (or the court runs out of lords), the game draws to a close, and the player with the most influence wins. On The Cards From now on, going off to explore is a perilous enterprise: battle is never a sure thing and fleeing can turn out to be even more dangerous. But this is a unique opportunity to prove your value and use that influence to ascend to the throne. I say not quite because once you control a location, the Lords you used to get it lose their special power. This was an interesting decision because on one hand, it stops a player from abusing a Lords power (and there are definitely some powerful ones, especially the red offensive ones), but on the other hand, it almost acts as a catch-up mechanic since when you gain control of a Location, you are gaining a decent amount of influence points. The Abyss power is once again vacant, so the time has come to ascend to the throne and claim its privileges. Use all your cunning to win or buy votes in the Council, recruit the most influential Lords, and abuse their powers to take control of the most strategic territories and finally, impose yourself as the only one able to rule the Abyssal people! Conspiracy is played over a number of rounds. On your turn you recruit Lords and then extend your Senate Chamber. Keep collections to yourself or inspire other shoppers! Keep in mind that anyone can view public collections - they may also appear in recommendations and other places. In the four years since Warcry released, Games Workshop has teased us with about two new Chaos Dwarf models and (unsurprisingly) has yet to produce full rules for Dawi-Zharr warbands. I have finally... If you have 3 or more keys, you must immediately take an available Location or draw 1-4 Locations, choose one and put the rest face up.

A few other additions the expansion brings is additional allies and lords, ability to play up to five players and a hand limit of 12 allies. Final Thoughts There are two expansions for Abyss that are available. The first is the Bombyx Abyss: Kraken which brings in some more corruption in the form of silver pearls. These are worth negative points and can be spent as regular pearls but only if you have no “normal” pearls available to spend. So getting rid of them is tough, but the cards that give you them are simply so powerful. The additions to the game that this offers are relatively small and subtle, which you would expect from a small box expansion, but I do enjoy playing with it still as a shakeup to the base game. Abyss- dip powder, dip powder for nails, nail dip powder, dip nail, dip powders, dip nail powder, nail dip, nail dips, dip nails, nails If nobody wants to buy an Ally, you either add it to your hand and end your turn, or reveal the next card and sell it, and so on.Choose a Lord available at Court and play the exact number of Allies from your hand needed to buy it. Firstly, there is no limit to the number of allies that a player can have in their hand, so it is difficult to physically hold them all. It is unclear if these are meant to be kept secret, but we find ourselves laying them out face-up so that it is easy for players (and other players) to see what they have. As long as everyone agrees to this we’ve never found it a problem. In Bombyx, Bruno Cathala, Charles Chevallier, Hand Management, Memory, Multiplayer, Open Drafting, Review, Set Collection, Single Player The cost of each lord in Abyss is shown in the bottom right corner. There will be a number which is the total strength of allies required and the colour that must be used surrounds this, there may also be pearls indicating the number of additional factions that will also need to be used to pay for swaying the lord. I think theme wise that you pay these jellyfish and seahorses for the lords to eat, which is kind of rough, but the lords do look like they would eat them. It follows the HL playbook pretty well. One of the things I found funny at the time was how destructible everything is. It might have been a selling point, but when I see chunks of concrete missing...

The game ends when there are not enough Lords to refill the Court or a player recruits their seventh lord. One of my only negative comments about Abyss, and something that I find difficult to deal with in games in general, is that in several places there are no limits to the number of cards that can be in play at one time. The total value of the Allies you play may be more than what is required, but the extra Ally points are lost. Once a player has recruited seven lords the game ends, scores are totalled, and the new ruler of the Abyss is declared! The second expansion is Leviathan: Abyss which adds some direction to how the monsters are fought. In the base game, you just fight the monster and always win, but in this expansion, there is abit more about the fighting aspects. This introduces a lot more strategy to the gameplay in my humble opinion. My recorded win rate in marvel champions is about 65%, which feels about right. More than anything I want wins to feel hard fought and losses to have felt winnable up until we got crushed, whatever... Reluctantly moving on, the other component of note are the pearls. Yes, the game comes with actual pearls. Well not real ones, but fake ones and little containers to hold them in during the game. I actually thought this was a nice thematic touch. While they can bounce around the room if misplaced, I enjoyed using them as the game currency and felt it was a nice thematic touch. High marks to Asmodee for going all out with the production of Abyss. How to Play: The Leviathan Expansion builds on the amazing gameplay of Abyss and adds a few new elements into the game.
