About this deal

Peated whiskey isn’t as popular in Ireland as it is in Scotland and you won’t find many distilleries selling it within their core range. An exception is Connemara, part of the Cooley distillery whose whisky also includes Kilbeggan. Belfast Distillery Company’s McConnell’s Irish Whisky 5 Years Old also took home a Gold medal after impressing with “super sharp, fresh green apples” on the nose and “white chocolate and pepper spices” on the palate. Further Golds went to The Irishman Harvest, Ha’Penny Four Cask, Jameson Crested, and Teeling Small Batch. Four Silvers were also awarded. The other all-Championship clash saw Dundela defeat Ards by the odd goal in five at Wilgar Park. The Duns seemed to be untroubled with first half goals from Jay Magee and Guillaume Keke putting them firmly in control, followed by a Rhys Annett strike with just over ten minutes to go but Eamon Scannell and Gary Donnelly scored late on the for the visitors to set up a nervy finish. The original Gelston's Irish whiskey brand was established in 1830 by Samuel Gelston. When he passed in 1869, the business was bought by Harry Neill, the great-grandfather of the man who eventually revived the brand, Johnny Neill. The founder of Whitley Neill Gin, he worked with Halewood to build on what Gelston’s historically did as an independent bottler, sourcing whiskey, and casks to finish some expressions. The excitement about the Irish whiskey category was palpable throughout the tasting, and showed there are some true gems to be found on the Emerald Isle. Further investment in Irish whiskey is inevitable, indicating that there will be much to look forward to in years to come. The third panel, chaired by Billy Abbott, ambassador at The Whisky Exchange, included: Caroline Roddis, editor of The Whisky Exchange; and drinks consultant Stephen Kennard, of SMJK Consulting. Two intermediate sides were drawn to face Premiership opposition. NIFL Premier Intermediate team Moyola Park are set to face Glentoran at home, while another NIFL Premier Intermediate outfit, Banbridge Town, have a derby tie to look forward to, and they will have home advantage. Portadown will be their opponents. The first panel was led by Melita Kiely, editor of The Spirits Business, and chair of The Global Spirits Masters Competitions. She was joined by: Michael Fichtner, whisky sommelier at The Coburg Bar at The Connaught; Herchelle Perez Terrado, director of Drinks Partnership; and Chris Tanner, general manager of Silverleaf bar in London. In the Flavoured Spirit Drink sector, for flavoured whiskey-based products, a Master medallist was hailed in the form of Carlow Cuttings Botanical Spirits. Spanish Earl Irish Whiskey intrigued the judges with its “wet washing on the nose”, leading to flavours of “toffee, butterscotch and orchard fruit” on the palate. The Irishman 12 Years Old was found to be “harmonious with elegant fruit”, while Tullamore Dew 18 Years Old was described as having “lingering sweetness with some spices and toffee”.

Johnny Neill, a fifth generation descendant of Harry J Neill revived the Samuel Gelston’s brand and yet again it is developing a worldwide following. PALATE: A dry but smooth mouth feel, honeyed with distinctive citrus notes. There’s also a hint of vanilla and burnt caramel. However Gelston's, like many Irish whiskey brands, then disappeared as sales slumped due to Prohibition in the USA during the 1920s but has now been revived by Johnny Neill, a fifth generation descendant of Harry J Neill. He has also created such brands as the Whitley Neill and Marylebone gins, and Samuel Gelston's sits within the wider Halewood Artisanal Spirits portfolio. The judges then tasted all the Irish whiskey Master medallists. With such a high standard in various categories, the final choice was anything but easy. However, after careful consideration the judges came to the consensus that Redbreast 27 Years Old would be The Irish Whiskey Taste Master 2022.

Before we play ‘guess the flavour’, here’s a list of the wood involved: we have the commonly used French and American oaks; the much more unusual Portuguese and Hungarian Oaks; and the some chestnut for good measure. As to the flavours, the last time we sipped it we think we detected spicey notes of cinnamon, nutmeg and something akin to incense; sweeter flavours of pastries, chocolate and cooked pineapple rings; and lots of wood. Polished wood, wood shavings, wet wood and charred wood. But as enjoyable as such guessing games can be, the key thing is that the overall taste is top quality. There are several Premiership v Championship clashes in the last 32, including Linfield at home to Warrenpoint Town, Dundela hosting Cliftonville, Newry City (h) v Harland and Wolff Welders, Ballinamallard United (h) v Glenavon, Coleraine (h) against Championship leaders Loughgall and Dungannon Swifts hosting Ards, Gelston’s Irish Whiskey has won 16 prestigious industry accolades across its portfolio since 2018, including Golds at this year’s San Francisco World Spirits Competition and Irish Spirits Masters for its Gelston’s Pinot Noir Cask Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey.
